Food is the crowning glory of Jogja, local food reigns as King and fusion sits by its side as Queen, you definitely won’t go hungry while visiting this magnificent place.

Countless amounts of temples await your discovery, abandoned castles beg you to visit, and the people are more than willing to show you! We went on a roadtrip around Central Java and we’re never quite ready to forget about it.

Don’t forget about Jogja’s natural charisma, a stunning variety of waterfalls, hiking trails, and caves are just sitting there ready for you to explore! Jump on board and let us show you the best of the best with hidden gems and iconic attractions!

23 Hidden beaches in Yogyakarta (Gunung Kidul) with pristine shores, secret waterfalls and rugged landscapes!

1. Chill in a lagoon by the sea: Wedi Ombo Beach

Always wanted to take a relaxing dip in the ocean but end up getting washed by the constant waves? At Wedi Ombo Beach in Gunungkidul, you can soak peacefully in the salt water as you watch the sun sink into the horizon.

Surrounded by neatly stacked coral rocks, you might even start to think that the lagoon at Wedi Ombo Beach is man-made. Be wary of the tide levels here though.

Photo Via Heri_tz, Anggagilangp_, Nyonyokecil, Nyonyokecil
Photo Via Soga Soegiarto

High tides have been seen to overflow into the lagoon, bringing its violent waves along. In a worst case scenario, the sudden gush of water creates a current strong enough to pull people towards the sea, possibly hitting coral rocks and causing injuries.

Wedi Ombo Beach

Parking fee: Rp. 10,000 (Approximately USD $0.75)
Address: Balong, Girisubo, Gunung Kidul, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Getting There: From Siung Beach, head towards the Tepus Junction and turn right, stay on the road and your destination will be on the right side of the road (Coordinates here)

2. Cross a suspension bridge over crashing waves: Sinden Beach & Kalong Island

Up for some adrenaline-inducing adventure? Sinden Beach is not your typical romantic white sand beach, but a rugged one flanked by a high cliff right next to the sea.

You can explore the adjacent Kalong Island – an untouched coral island overgrown with wild flora – by crossing a suspension bridge high up with the ferocious waves crashing beneath you. As the sea breeze shakes the bridge and the salty waves kiss your cheeks, take every step with caution – one misstep can be very costly!

3. Surround yourself with the raw nature of Java: Air Terjun Kedung Kandang

You’ll stop in your tracks when you set your eyes on this idyllic scenery, with rice paddies, gently cascading waterfalls and turquoise water.

The tranquil Air Terjun Kedung Kandang, located in the village of Mount Butak, cascades down 6 levels of the terraced rice fields. You’ll only get to see this wonder of nature during the rainy season.

Photo Via Totohandoko, Yvettheworld, Fajarnasution

To get there, a bit of trekking is required. But don’t worry, it is a scenic walk along a nature path where you will be treated to views of the mountains, hills, rivers and farmers in the rice paddies. Make sure you bring water and light snacks along with you.

Note: There is not much water during the dry season

Air Terjun Kedung Kandang

Entrance fee: Rp. 8,000 (Approximately USD $0.60)

4. Take a relaxing dip in a pure natural pool: Curug Pulosari

Hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Yogyakarta, Culog Pulosari is a well-concealed waterfall that offers raw aquatic charm.

As the waterfall is situated at the bottom of a cliff, those who wish to admire the sparkling blue water cascading down will need to do a bit of trekking, which includes hiking through a forest and crossing a small river.

Photo Via Mardheni

At Curug Pulosari, you’ll be amazed by the view of water tumbling down the hillside, forming a natural water curtain that’s complemented by the surrounding lush green vegetation. This definitely is a treat from nature that will perk your day up!

Indulge your senses by simply soaking your feet in the crystal clear water or dive into the natural pond.

6. Descend into Jurassic Park: Jomblang Cave

Jomblang Cave was formed thousands of years ago when a patch of land measuring 300 metres across dropped into a sinkhole. Till now, the vegetation in the cave consists of weeds, mushrooms, ferns and even large trees that remain untouched and preserved over hundreds of years.

Descending down to almost 80 metres from the mouth of the cave, you can start to smell the damp aging trees standing by layers of rocks built up over the centuries!

Photo Via Venusrins, Tun_tun_photo_diary

During the right time of the day (somewhere between 11.30am to 12.30pm), the sun’s rays shine through the opening, illuminating the forest below, creating a mesmerizing sight to feast your eyes on.

Because of the remote location and limited daily visitors, make sure you make a reservation with the contact person for a tour package (including transportation) beforehand, since not many locals know about the place. Bring spare clothes to change into, including an extra pair of socks, unless you don’t mind lugging a smelly lump of dirt home.

7. Challenge yourself and cross over the rough seas: Pantai Timang

Yes, this is the famous Timang Beach, where you can sit in a cable cart and be pulled across the sea, with the fierce crashing waves beneath you. Once a hidden spot, it’s now popularised after being featured on Korean variety show ‘Running Man’.

Photo Via TripCanvas

This cable cart was originally used as a means of transport to cross over to the neighbouring Pulau Timang, where fishermen caught fresh lobsters. Now, it’s been transformed into a tourist experience.

We crossed the suspension bridge too, and honestly, it felt scarier than the cable cart, as you have to keep your balance on the bridge. Definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Don’t miss out on the viewpoint platform with endless views of the ocean too!

Photo Via Wanderdove, Syfresha

TRIPCANVAS TIP
Before you reach, you might come across several road signs pointing you to Timang Beach along the way, but do avoid following them as they lead you to scammers trying to convince you to take the jeep to the beach (they will tell you that the road conditions are too bad for cars), though it is physically possible for cars to drive in. Use this unmarked road entrance instead, and you will be able to drive down a proper road all the way to the beach. Following the road signs will lead you to a rocky road that your car would be unable to drive through.

We went via the wrong route and our car got stuck due to the terrible road condition of that road, so we walked down to the beach instead, and it took approximately 1 hour. So if you have tried driving down the better road that we have given above, please share with us your experience! We would really appreciate it 🙂

Pantai Timang

Entrance Fee: Rp 10,000
Parking fee: Rp 5,000 (approximately USD 0.33 for motorbikes) and Rp 10.000 (approximately USD 0.66 for cars)

Suspension Bridge Fee: Rp.150,000 (Approximately USD$10.70)
Address: 55881 Jl. Pantai Sel. Jawa, Purwodadi, Tepus, Kabupaten Gunung Kidul, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta 55881 (Coordinates here)
Getting there: From Wonosari, head South on Jl. Baron – turn left onto Jl. Tepus – turn left onto Jl. Pantai Selatan Jawa. Timang Beach is a 3-hour drive from Yogyakarta city.
Opening hours: Mon – Sun, 9am – 5pm (for activities)

9. Uncover the mystery of the 7 families with an easy beginner hike: Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran

Once an active volcano around 60 million years ago, the Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran is one of the oldest volcanoes in the Central Java region. Its unusual shape may be due to the fact that it was once an undersea rock which emerged above the surface from a volcanic eruption.

Standing 700 metres above the Gunungkidul countryside, this two-peaked mountain surprisingly only requires about 60 to 90 minutes of trekking past exotic rock formations, native inhabitants and narrow stone walls.

Photo Via Folk.jogja, Alexyudha, Thomasdian

Upon reaching either the West or the East peaks, you may come across a few residents along the way. This is because according to local beliefs, there should be exactly seven families living on the mountain – if there’s any more or any less, a catastrophe is bound to happen.

As you stand on the summit, the phenomenal view of the karst mountain range and lush greenery can take you back to the Java that stood several hundred years ago, especially at sunrise! Don’t miss the Embug Ngalanggeran, a water reservoir that is both beautiful and functional, providing water to the surrounding villages and farms.

24. Addictive chicken noodles cooked in secret sauce!: Mie Ayam Bu Tumini

This chicken noodle stall has won the hearts of everyone since the early 90s, and there isn’t a day when it’s not packed to the brim. Choose between chicken feet or chicken pieces as topping, you can even opt for their extra chicken option, go for a jumbo bowl or simply half a portion!

Photo Via TripCanvas

The sauce is rich and thick, sweet and savoury with a peanut aftertaste! An intriguing yet amazing concoction of flavours, levelled up with some sambal and an iced tea to beat the heat (it’s super stuffy at the stall as it is always overcrowded, so come prepared – pack some patience and tie your hair up!).

Tip: Get an extra plate of Bok Choy on the side too! You will have to queue for a few minutes and fight for a seat but the wait is incredibly worth it!

25. Comfort home-cooked food: Bakmi Mbah Mo

« COMFORT FOOD!! » – this is what we screamed after taking in the first slurp of this heartwarming Bakmi.

They’ve got two versions (dry or soupy) and we tried them both. Egg is mixed to the broth and looks scrambled, your noodles are topped with perfectly shredded chicken and a sprinkle of spring onions for that savoury kick!

It’s a casual eatery, so don’t have high expectations on comfortable seating but you can enjoy a live cooking experience and see every bit of your Bakmi being made from scratch!

Photo Via Nyonyokecil, Tashikravitz ,TripCanvas

Gulp this down with a cup of their hot ginger tea (Teh Jahe), but request for less sugar – the Javanese have a sweet tooth!

Bakmi Mbah Mo

Price: Rp.15,000 – 20,000 (Approximately USD$1 – $1.42)

26. Indulge in the oldest Gudeg recipe: Gudeg Mbah Lindu Sosrowijayan

Imagine the century-old Mbah Lindu hunched over her boiling pots, cooking her legendary Gudeg over charcoal, every day for more than 80 years.

After which, she would walk for 4 kilometres every morning from her home to this same spot to sell to her local customers and even tourists all over the world who have heard of her. Now, you can spot her daughter taking over the reins at her stall, though it is said that Mbah Lindu still cooks the Gudeg herself!

Try their Gudeg for breakfast as it comes with a choice of rice or porridge! The sauce is creamy and spicy, the chicken is soft and falls apart easily as it soaks up the broth while the egg is boiled to perfection!

Photo Via Devianatenly, Peresthu, Ikhwanudin.rofii

Note: There are two Gudeg stalls on the road at Sosrowijayan – the other one is named Gudeg Mbak Lindu. But Gudeg Mbah Lindu is the legendary one that we recommend here!

27. A very delicious buffet gone the local way: Waroeng Kopi Klotok

You must have heard all about the popular Indonesian buffet concept – all-you-can-eat, and just inform the cashier what you took to get the final price. And guess what, this must be one of the very best local buffets we had in Yogyakarta. This isn’t your fancy coffee shop – be prepared to eat at a Joglo, converted into a dining place. It’s packed full of locals and of course the best seats are right outside by the rice paddy fields.

Photo Via TripCanvas

It doesn’t make sense to talk about dessert first, but they have the best Pisang Goreng (Banana fritters) there. It’s served warm, with gooey, mashed banana inside and fried to perfection. For the main courses, the Nasi Megono is what attracts the crowd here – rice cooked in seasoned coconut milk, mixed with vegetables and salted fish.

And of course, this place is named after their famous Kopi Klotok, so don’t miss it!

P.S. We’ve heard that pregnant ladies are welcome to eat as much as they want, for free! And we recommend coming early in the morning to get the freshest food and best seats!

Kedai Kopi Klotok

Price: From Rp.15,000 (Approximately USD $1)

Opening hours: Mon – Sun, 7am – 10pm

28. Fresh fruit (including avocado) with shaved ice!: Es Buah PK

We can’t thank the person enough behind this creative dessert – which dates back to the early 70s!

This roadside stall specialises in shaved ice dessert, but not the traditional kind, as they serve it with generous amounts of freshly sliced fruits like avocado, coconut and pineapple, along with secret syrup concoctions (apparently chocolate condensed milk) and grass jelly cubes. This is something for your sweet tooth.

Photo Via TripCanvas

The stall also sells noodles and meatballs (bakso); so if you’re here for lunch, you also got your dessert sorted!

Es Buak PK

Price: From Rp. 5,000 (Approximately USD $0.36)
Address: Jalan Pakuningratan Nomor 76 A, Cokrodiningratan, Jetis, Kota Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (Coordinates here)

When in Paris, you visit the Eiffel Tower, and when in Jogja, you visit the Prambanan Temple – a UNESCO World Heritage Site consisting of 240 temples!

This 9th century Hindu temple was built and dedicated to 3 Hindu deities, Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Preserver) and Shiva (Destroyer), and towers at 47 metres high!

Combine your visit to Prambanan Temple with a must-watch performance in Jogja, the Ramayana Ballet. Catch the spectacular ballet in the evening where over 200 dancers and musicians perform on an open air stage – with the Prambanan Temples rising majestically in the background. The ballet itself is based on the story of King Rama. While it originated from India, the current story has since been adapted to the Javanese style, culture and music.

30. Learn all about this world-famous heritage temple at sunrise: Borobudur Temple

You must have heard that Borobudur Temple, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see if you are in Yogyakarta. We second this, and don’t forget to choose the sunrise tour! As the sky starts to lighten, the stupas turn into different hues with the sun rays reflecting and piercing through.

From our past experience, we would highly recommend you to book a sunrise tour package from Klook, which includes pick-up from your hotel at 3.30am (to reach the top of the temple by 5am) and drop-off services. 33. Wander into the secrets of a water fortress: Taman Sari

Europe isn’t the only place to indulge in 18th Century architecture. This garden chateau (decorated with swimming pools in the middle of the courtyard), which was built by the Portuguese during their residence in Java as a gift for the wives of Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, is a perfect representation of Yogyakarta’s royalty a few hundred years ago.

After you have meandered along the corridors that lead to the castle tower (which boasts of a magnificent view), take a few steps down past the Gapura Agung (Grand Entrance), and descend into the Tajug, a system of mysterious underground catacombs that once served as bunkers during war, and a tunnel connecting the Taman Sari, the Keraton, and Pulo Kenongo.

Make your way up the pathway, past refreshing waterfalls and other stone carved ornaments that decorate King Boko’s Palace, and you will start to bask in the blue-blooded atmosphere where Javanese royalty once resided.

Admire the three temples located in the royal compound, including the caverns scattered at secluded areas where monks once meditated. Not to forget the many stone ponds where natural ground water runs, believed to possess healing and cleansing powers.

You’ll appreciate the majestic portals that stand at the end of each staircase, welcoming you to each level of the chateau, as you ascend to the very top where a balcony sits.

Besides our purchases, the market is packed full of other shops featuring batik products as well as affordable shoes and even artisanal perfumes (they have the craziest scents, from chocolate to kiwi!)

Rest assured, men are not left behind- you’ll surely find gifts for the men of your life there – shirts and trendy T-shirts make better souvenirs than cliché keychains and fridge magnets (just saying!).

40. Test your bargaining skills at a souvenir haven: Batik Danar Hadi at Malioboro Street

From batik shirts to miniature rickshaws, Malioboro Street is Yogyakarta’s answer to Bangkok’s night markets.

An overcrowded street during the weekends is usual, as it has been serving as Yogyakarta’s centre of trade since the colonial era. A concoction of traditional gamelan music blasting on crackling loudspeakers, dubbed with the yells of hawkers, is the soundtrack for a stroll through this street market.

For Batik, a traditional artform, you want to head to Danar Hadi where you’ll find endless rows of beautiful and colourful prints! Enjoy coming home with a bag full of incredible souvenirs for you and your loved ones.

2. A golden beauty that comes around once a year: Taman Bunga Amarilis

Directly translated to mean Amaryllis garden, this place is an absolute gem to wander around. Blooming fully during the month of November, if you find yourself in Jogja during the season, you absolutely have to go and see the red and orange sea of flowers.

Brightly coloured petals surround your body, and a mild, sweet, delicate smell encompases the air, while you definitely won’t be spending long here, take some time to just stop and literally smell the flowers!

1. When to travel to Yogyakarta

For more info, tap to expand!

Yogyakarta is great all year long, and the temperature remains roughly the same through the year. However, it would a good idea to try to avoid the peak of the rainy season – which usually falls between January and March, so the rain won’t deter you from visiting any of your destinations.

Being the cultural capital of Indonesia, the month of Suro (first month of the Lunar Calendar) is also a time when many places of worship in Yogyakarta perform annual rituals – something you wouldn’t want to miss when coming to Yogyakarta.

2. Getting there

3. Getting around

For more info, tap to expand!

Although public transportation is available in Yogyakarta, it is not recommended since its schedule is not what you would call reliable. The stops also do not extend as far as many of the destinations you might want to visit. If you haven’t had your transportation arranged, here are a few options you might want to consider;

a. Rent a car with a driver/tour guide

Packages usually include fuel, toll fees, parking, and the driver’s meal throughout the day (make sure these things are made clear before making a booking). Most operators will offer similar prices ranged below Rp. 500,000 per day (USD 37) for 4-6 passengers.

Our recommendation?

Mr. Ukhi has built an excellent reputation over the years on the interwebs, and has now launched his own website. He speaks English fluently and can arrange the trip according to your requirement. Best of all, he knows all the best spots around town,  and his vehicle of choice is usually the Toyota Avanza. (However, he can definitely make arrangements for larger groups as well!)

b. Rent a car without a driver

If you are feeling a little more adventurous, Yogyakarta is not too difficult to navigate. (Do note that it would most definitely be a good idea to preload your GPS maps, or get a physical map. Mobile service can be unreliable in many parts of the Gunungkidul area).

Most rental services offer a Toyota Avanza (7-seater) at around Rp. 350,000 per day (USD 26). However, we’ve found that Cahaya Transport, the cheapest and one of the most equipped operators offers them at Rp. 250,000 per day (USD 19).
