Written by Beverley Lennon
Edited by Candice Neo

If there’s one thing Bali is known for, it’s the amount of incredible private villas it has on offer. The island is replete with a range of accommodation options ranging from family-friendly resorts to rainforest hotels and much more! But the star of the show in Bali really has to be the villas… And the good news is that you don’t always have to break your purse to afford a villa stay in Bali. Some private pool villas can even be booked for under USD $90!

Now, some of you might have already seen the best of Bali and are looking to venture further this time. Well, you’ll be happy to know that the islands surrounding Bali are also slowly catching up with the villa game. The Nusa Islands, in particular, have gone from small wooden shacks to fantastic ocean view villas!

Or maybe this is your first time in Bali and you’d like to see beyond the mainland. In that case, why not make it grand and stay at an ocean view villa in the Nusa Islands? Here are some of our favourite ones, of which a few even overlook the mighty Mount Agung volcano!

Nusa Penida

A short 30-minute boat ride from Bali, Nusa Penida is the largest of the three Nusa islands. The island is relatively undeveloped and you will find only a limited number of hotels here, meaning privacy is often a given.

What sets it apart from its sister islands is the plethora of unspoiled natural attractions and untouched landscapes. One of Nusa Penida’s main draws is to go visit its cliff formations and turquoise lagoons. You can see more things to do in Nusa Penida on our complete guide.

1. An Instagrammer’s dream – Tropical Glamping

Tropical Glamping is a stay that captures the exoticism of Nusa Penida perfectly. The assorted collection of glamping suites can be found perched hundreds of meters above crystal blue waters, known to be rich in sea life – turtles and manta rays are only a few of the species that can be seen swimming below.

It also happens to be one of Nusa Penida most-talked about accommodation – each of the suites is incredibly characterful in design. There are two different types of bungalow options here. One perched on the cliff’s edge and equipped with a hanging net. The other, equally as magical, is designed with an open air concept, offering you unobstructed views of the ocean from the very moment you wake up.

With its remote location, and limited number of bungalows, the stay brings a whole new meaning to exclusivity and privacy.

Do note though that the roads leading to the accommodation can be a little rugged and during the wet season it could get very muddy. Just make sure to be cautious at all times.

Also bear in mind that you might come across little visitors during your stay. Because the area remains relatively undeveloped, monkeys, and other small insects still roam around. That being said, the level of service and the views you get to enjoy from here will definitely make up for it!

Tropical Glamping also offers many incredible experiences, ranging from  private romantic dinners to full day tours and special occasion surprises. But our favourite is surely the possibility of having breakfast delivered straight to your bed!

Nusa Lembongan

Just like the other Nusa Islands, Nusa Lembongan is accessible via a 30-minute boat ride from Bali. Here, you can enjoy the perfect combination of the old Indonesia and the comforts of modern hotels, resorts and villas.

Nusa Lembongan offers beautiful white-sand beaches and gin-clear lagoons waiting to be explored. There’s also plenty of restaurants, cool cafes, and beach clubs spread around the island.

It’s also known for its iconic Devil’s Tears where you can see waves crashing against the cliff – a scenic (yet dramatic) view to behold! Check out attractions and activities to do in Nusa Lembongan here.

6. This is what house goals are made of – Villa Asri (Aqua Nusa)

Indulge in absolute isolation at Villa Asri. The villa is part of the Aqua Nusa property group which features multiple villa options ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedroom villas. But if you ask us, Villa Asri is the star property. It is geared exclusively to couples and that’s what makes it even more desirable!

The living room area has floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors through which you can bask in superb Indian Ocean views. These also make for the villa to be constantly airy and bright, bringing in cooling ocean breeze all day long. What’s best, the beach is just a two-minute walk from here so literally right on your doorstep!

What makes Villa Asri really special though is the quality of service you get from them–- step off the boat to be greeted by the staff. In no time, your luggage gets whisked away and dropped off directly at the reception. They will also help to organize tours and transportation (such as bike rental) within the island. You’re basically taken care of like true royalty!

Nusa Ceningan

Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the three Nusa Islands. It sits right in between the bigger islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. Seaweed farming is a major activity on the island of Nusa Ceningan, and many of its locals depend on this business for survival. It’s also an island for the daredevils, with multiple cliff jumping points.

11. One for the whole crew – The Puncak Villa

For over two years (thanks to the pandemic), group trips have been off the cards. That family reunion, that bachelorette party you’ve been waiting for… All the exciting times you were looking forward to have had to wait. But now, with the world opening up again and travel restarting, you can finally make it happen!

And what better way to celebrate than by staying at an ocean view villa?!

This one in particular, our favourite, sleeps 8: there are four bedrooms – including two double beds and four single beds. You’ll also find an inviting swimming pool and an Instagrammable hanging net from which you can take in splendid views.

The villa sits in a secluded corner of the island so expect the roads to be a little rough. That said, there are great restaurants with a view to discover in the surroundings. Don’t miss Ceningan Cliffs for some drinks, spectacular views and their most recent addition (as of 2022)… their swimming pool!
