If there’s one thing Bali is known for, it’s the amount of incredible private villas it has on offer. The island is replete with a range of accommodation options ranging from family-friendly resorts to rainforest hotels and much more! But the star of the show in Bali really has to be the villas… And the good news is that you don’t always have to break your purse to afford a villa stay in Bali. Some private pool villas can even be booked for under USD $90!
Now, some of you might have already seen the best of Bali and are looking to venture further this time. Well, you’ll be happy to know that the islands surrounding Bali are also slowly catching up with the villa game. The Nusa Islands, in particular, have gone from small wooden shacks to fantastic ocean view villas!
Or maybe this is your first time in Bali and you’d like to see beyond the mainland. In that case, why not make it grand and stay at an ocean view villa in the Nusa Islands? Here are some of our favourite ones, of which a few even overlook the mighty Mount Agung volcano!
Guide to the Nusa Islands (Bali) – Best things to do, where to stay and eat in Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan and Penida!
Note: The prices reflected below are low season rates, and they exclude tax and service charges. Accommodation rates often change with room availability and low or high seasons. We recommend double-checking for the final prices before confirming your booking.
A short 30-minute boat ride from Bali, Nusa Penida is the largest of the three Nusa islands. The island is relatively undeveloped and you will find only a limited number of hotels here, meaning privacy is often a given.
What sets it apart from its sister islands is the plethora of unspoiled natural attractions and untouched landscapes. One of Nusa Penida’s main draws is to go visit its cliff formations and turquoise lagoons. You can see more things to do in Nusa Penida on our complete guide.
1. An Instagrammer’s dream – Tropical Glamping
Tropical Glamping is a stay that captures the exoticism of Nusa Penida perfectly. The assorted collection of glamping suites can be found perched hundreds of meters above crystal blue waters, known to be rich in sea life – turtles and manta rays are only a few of the species that can be seen swimming below.
It also happens to be one of Nusa Penida most-talked about accommodation – each of the suites is incredibly characterful in design. There are two different types of bungalow options here. One perched on the cliff’s edge and equipped with a hanging net. The other, equally as magical, is designed with an open air concept, offering you unobstructed views of the ocean from the very moment you wake up.
With its remote location, and limited number of bungalows, the stay brings a whole new meaning to exclusivity and privacy.
Do note though that the roads leading to the accommodation can be a little rugged and during the wet season it could get very muddy. Just make sure to be cautious at all times.
Also bear in mind that you might come across little visitors during your stay. Because the area remains relatively undeveloped, monkeys, and other small insects still roam around. That being said, the level of service and the views you get to enjoy from here will definitely make up for it!
Tropical Glamping also offers many incredible experiences, ranging from private romantic dinners to full day tours and special occasion surprises. But our favourite is surely the possibility of having breakfast delivered straight to your bed!
2. A whole new meaning to exclusivity (25 luxury villas only!) – MĀUA Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida, Bali’s mesmerizing little paradise is now brighter than ever with the fabulous MĀUA hotel sitting on its shores. Enveloped in glistening vistas, lush greens and splendid views of Mount Agung, the stay guarantees your absolute privacy and exclusivity with a limited number of 25 luxury villas.
MĀUA Nusa Penida operates with a focus on sustainability, aiming at reducing its carbon footprint from its exterior to interiors by its use of recycled ironwood furniture, not using any plastic elements, reducing recycled paper for all printed guest collateral, and utilising greywater recycling. The hotel has also been designed to seamlessly blend in with the natural surroundings.
What’s even more exciting is that they all feature their very own private pool. Although, if you ask us, it is tough to resist the turquoise waters of the Nusa Islands…
As for the one bedroom luxury villa, it comes with a private infinity pool, scenic view across the Gamat Bay or Mount Agung, and some have a small private garden. Even more beautiful is their one bedroom suite villa, with more space and an air-conditioned lounge area.
Discover its KŌWHAI Restaurant – an all-day dining venue featuring a ‘Fresh from the Farm’ menu concept. It celebrates fresh, local, seasonal produce. Where possible, they harvest ingredients from the resort’s very own organic garden.
And with their in-villa dining services, all this can be delivered straight to your room for a romantic dinner date.
After a long day’s exploring the island’s natural attractions, why not surprise your significant other with something special? Make a less strenuous wander to the spa and enjoy a relaxing body treatment for two.
Afterwards, laze on a sunlounger by the swimming pool while the staff at Aroha Bar whip up some delectable cocktails for you. The possibilities are endless…

Secret Penida Villa is a hidden gem, with incredible sea views and aesthetically-pleasing interiors. It features an infinity pool that sets you right by the ocean. From here, you can jump in and enjoy a snorkeling session, the water conditions are almost always perfect.
It’s at sunset though, that things take an even more magical turn. On a clear day, once the sun goes down, Bali’s magnificent Mount Agung can be seen sitting over the horizon.
Take in the views right from your pool or settle down on one of the sun loungers, and maybe get yourself a drink from their sister cafe. There is ample space to have some family and friends over for a small barbeque in the evening too.

5. Bask in magnificent volcano views – Agung View Villa
What’s better than waking up to ocean views?
Waking up to ocean views and volcano views! All of this is possible when staying at Agung View Villa. As its name suggests, the villa sits by the ocean, with Mount Agung right across the horizon! Needless to say, it’s a wonderful feeling to be able to bask in such a magnificent natural wonder from the comfort of your swimming pool…
What’s more, every room in the villa offers a stunning view of the sea and the village of Toya Pakeh. Inside, you will find two double rooms on the ground floor of the villa and two double rooms on the third floor.
The villa features a kitchen, a living room with a terrace and 3 bathrooms. With so much space, the villa makes for a great place to stay with family and friends. Sundowners from here are said to be spectacular! Why not make use of the barbeque facilities for a memorable evening with your loved ones?
Take note that the road leading to the villa is also bumpy due to the fact that Nusa Penida does not have the best infrastructure yet, so it is recommended to come by car rather than bike or scooter. Previous guests have also brought up the fact that hot water is almost non-existent so prepare for some refreshing showers!

Just like the other Nusa Islands, Nusa Lembongan is accessible via a 30-minute boat ride from Bali. Here, you can enjoy the perfect combination of the old Indonesia and the comforts of modern hotels, resorts and villas.
Nusa Lembongan offers beautiful white-sand beaches and gin-clear lagoons waiting to be explored. There’s also plenty of restaurants, cool cafes, and beach clubs spread around the island.
It’s also known for its iconic Devil’s Tears where you can see waves crashing against the cliff – a scenic (yet dramatic) view to behold! Check out attractions and activities to do in Nusa Lembongan here.
6. This is what house goals are made of – Villa Asri (Aqua Nusa)
Indulge in absolute isolation at Villa Asri. The villa is part of the Aqua Nusa property group which features multiple villa options ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedroom villas. But if you ask us, Villa Asri is the star property. It is geared exclusively to couples and that’s what makes it even more desirable!
The living room area has floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors through which you can bask in superb Indian Ocean views. These also make for the villa to be constantly airy and bright, bringing in cooling ocean breeze all day long. What’s best, the beach is just a two-minute walk from here so literally right on your doorstep!
What makes Villa Asri really special though is the quality of service you get from them–- step off the boat to be greeted by the staff. In no time, your luggage gets whisked away and dropped off directly at the reception. They will also help to organize tours and transportation (such as bike rental) within the island. You’re basically taken care of like true royalty!
7. One for every group size – Tenang Villas
Perched on a hilltop location in Jungut Batu, Tenang Villas boast 180-degree sea views. The property also overlooks the breathtaking Mount Agung volcano.
Here, you have a choice of one, two or three bedrooms private villas, or the entire complex can be booked for larger groups or a few families with 6 bedrooms, 6 bathrooms and 3 pools, sleeping up to 14 people.
What’s more, each villa is equipped with its very own private pool, spacious open plan living area, and full kitchen facilities. They are also serviced daily. The villas’ team consists of three full time staff that are available to assist with your holiday plans and island activities.
One thing to note is that you will be required to climb a series of stairs to have access to the villa, so it might not be the ideal option if you’re traveling with an elderly. Another downside to staying here is that you will never want to leave!
8. It’s almost like Fiji in here – Villa Damai
If you’ve always dreamt of a romantic getaway by the ocean, we recommend stopping right here. Set on the shores of Nusa Lembongan, Villa Damai embraces the coveted views of the island’s turquoise waters.
The villa features one bedroom, complete with a private plunge pool. To add to the tropical experience, they also offer the possibility of requesting a dreamy outdoor massage to the soothing sound of the ocean (at an additional cost of Rp. 200,000). Also worth catching on camera: views of the incredible Mount Agung. Right from where you stand!
In the surroundings, you can find a plethora of restaurants and smaller eateries. Gorge on some delectable Thai delicacies at the nearby Thai Pantry – a plate of Pad Thai from here never disappoints.

9. How about a double date? – Villa Kingfisher
Don’t get us wrong, we love a romantic getaway to Bali but sometimes a low-key double date with your favourite couple is what’s called for. So if you’re looking for a villa to rent together, Villa Kingfisher in Nusa Lembongan might just be the one.
Tucked in the south-west region of the island, the villa features two bedrooms, sleeping up to 4 adults. There’s also a glorious swimming pool from where you can admire unobstructed views of the glittering ocean. It’s a view guests get to enjoy from the impressive living room and dining space as well.
Villa Kingfisher is definitely a place to fall in love with, the perfect crash pad after a couple of days partying in Bali. Days here are best spent lounging on bean bags as you collect tan lines. Or maybe find a spot in the shady corner to enjoy an outdoor snooze…

10. Small, dreamy and cute bohemian beach house – La Kabane
One word: spectacular! Located a few steps from Paradise Beach, La Kabane is a mighty cute little beach house, but the view it has on offer is simply out-of-this-world!
Paying tribute to the splendor of its setting, La Kabane is designed to ensure guests can take in magnificent ocean and volcano views right from the moment they step onto their terrace and plunge into the pool. Inside, the villa is equipped with one bedroom, an outdoor bathroom, a dining area and a fully equipped kitchen.
On days where you don’t feel like stepping out, there is also the possibility of having a local chef come whip up delectable dishes right at your villa!
The team at La Kabane truly goes above and beyond to ensure you have a comfortable stay. From bike rental to island tours, they’re happy to help with your requests. Just ask and you shall receive (talk about VIP treatment!).

Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the three Nusa Islands. It sits right in between the bigger islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. Seaweed farming is a major activity on the island of Nusa Ceningan, and many of its locals depend on this business for survival. It’s also an island for the daredevils, with multiple cliff jumping points.
11. One for the whole crew – The Puncak Villa
For over two years (thanks to the pandemic), group trips have been off the cards. That family reunion, that bachelorette party you’ve been waiting for… All the exciting times you were looking forward to have had to wait. But now, with the world opening up again and travel restarting, you can finally make it happen!
And what better way to celebrate than by staying at an ocean view villa?!
This one in particular, our favourite, sleeps 8: there are four bedrooms – including two double beds and four single beds. You’ll also find an inviting swimming pool and an Instagrammable hanging net from which you can take in splendid views.
The villa sits in a secluded corner of the island so expect the roads to be a little rough. That said, there are great restaurants with a view to discover in the surroundings. Don’t miss Ceningan Cliffs for some drinks, spectacular views and their most recent addition (as of 2022)… their swimming pool!
