And since we’ve been craving for cooler climates, we decided to spend two weeks around East Java to explore the region. Throughout the wet season (December – April), it will be gloomy on most days and terrains at natural attractions can get very slippery. TripCanvas’ Tip: We were there during the Ramadan season and thoroughly enjoyed visiting around with no crowd! 1. The land of fantasy for Instagrammers – Batu Flower Garden, Batu (1 hour from Malang) We did not have much expectations from this spot. In fact, we thought it was merely just a flower garden (blame it on its name) but the venue is much more than that. There are various photo-spots around (more than 35 in total) and you’re set in a beautiful scenery, surrounded by magical hill views. Of course, they do have a big collection of flowers too and to our utmost surprise, the garden seems to be extremely well-maintained! Photo via Tripcanvas Our favourite photo spot here has to be the gigantic “I ❤ U” platform, where couples can create ultimate #couplegoals pictures with an endless lush backdrop. Also, don’t miss their snowland and hobbit houses where you get to pretend to be in Europe or New Zealand! Or embark on a trekking adventure to discover a waterfall hidden deep in a pristine forest! Photo via Tripcanvas TripCanvas’ Tip: To go to Batu Flower Garden from the parking area, you will need to either walk up for 5km or take a motorbike (Rp.10,000 per person per way). And besides two photo spots included in the entrance fee, take note that every photo spot requires additional fees per person (around Rp.10,000 onwards per spot). Dine with a view at Malang’s scenic cafes! Besides great food, we’re always on the lookout for unique eateries with stunning views to relish on. Here are Malang’s best cafes and restaurants where you can bask in sweeping views of lush green nature! 2. Dine in a pyramid-shaped glass house! - deKleine Hidden in the forest of Oro Oro Ombo is a unique cafe that has received much attention on social media – thanks to its intense Instagram bragging rights! Once there, we had the choice to settle down in their garden area, pyramid glass house, or on the rooftop. We first decided to sit down in the pyramid glass house but it was very humid and stuffy so we decided to go on the rooftop area to enjoy a nice breeze and endless views of the garden and beyond. Photo via Tripcanvas There’s nothing much to rave about the food offerings and quality, they were rather basic but we also heard they have some Korean BBQ dishes. Other than that, we thoroughly enjoyed the views and atmosphere. Photo via Tripcanvas But the best part yet has to be their bunny house – they have tons of adorable fluffy balls hopping around and they’re super cuddly! Sitting across the cafe is a horse farm where you can witness majestic horses galloping in a vast field too. Photo via Tripcanvas 3. Come for sunset drinks with magical city views! - 15 Celsius The Skylounge There sure is a reason for this place’s name. Indeed, we did feel the 15°C temperature at the rooftop skylounge as it got quite chilly once the sun dropped, but the views are beyond amazing! Photo via Tripcanvas If you make it in time for the golden hour, you’ll also be able to spot on the last sights of the surrounding mountain ranges and vast plantations as the sky slowly gets swallowed by darkness, replacing the scenery with sparkling stars and city lights. Photo via Tripcanvas We could barely take in the cold so we opted to dine at the indoor area which also offers amazing views as it features floor-to-ceiling windows. While dishes are reasonably priced and tasty, we’d strongly recommend you to try their apple strudel and BBQ chicken wings! An almost Bali-like cafe with magical views! - Pupuk Bawang Cafe & Dining Imagine sitting at the foot of the mountain, surrounded by green rice paddies and emerald green forests in the background while enjoying some local snacks with your friends. Located away from the hubbub of the city, this cafe is worth visiting for a refreshing and relaxing afternoon where you can invite your friends or make new ones! In the evening, the atmosphere changes into a lively spot with sparkling light decorations. Fresh cool air and tons of good vibes are what you will get at Pupuk Bawang Coffee! With its vibrant history, Malang is home to a number of not-so-boring museums, including some of the most unusual ones! These are the three you can’t miss: 5. Become a vehicle connoisseur at Southeast Asia’s largest transportation museum - Museum Angkut (1 hour from Malang) What comes to your mind when you hear the word ‘museum’? If just like us you assume that all museums are boring; you’ll be surprised by Museum Angkut! We had so much fun here! Known to be South East Asia’s largest transportation museum, this is where we had the chance to check out over 300 collections of modes of transport from all over the world! Photo via Tripcanvas Yes, that includes coming up close to a real 66 Ford Mustang, stepping into a real size Indonesian presidential plane (the best part, if you ask us!), standing next to a gigantic rocket replica and so much more! Photo via Tripcanvas You’ll go through zones/countries as you explore all collections, so get ready to take a journey back to ancient Batavia and Chinatown or be transported to England, America and France! At the end of the day, come and join in their incredible showtime! We thoroughly enjoyed their ‘Special Car and Costume Parade’ where superheroes made an epic entrance aboard a collection of antique cars to surprise us with a flash mob in an 80’s New York setting! Big guns and even bigger rides – Museum Brawijaya Named after one of the most prominent army forces during Indonesia’s fight for independence, Brawijaya Museum displays some of the artillery used in the many battles fought in the 1940’s – including the battle of Surabaya on November 10th 1945. Hosting a collection of armoured vehicles from tanks to personal cars used by army generals, this museum will definitely pull the strings of any military geek. Especially with an artillery collection from small firearms to huge anti-air missiles! One of the most interesting pieces of history lies in the center courtyard of the museum. Known as ‘Gerbong Maut’ or ‘Death Train’, this seemingly harmless train car has claimed more lives than you could possibly imagine. During the war, 100 captives were ‘sardined’ in this very train from Bondowoso, but only 12 walked out upon arrival in Surabaya! *yikes* 7. This is not for the faint-hearted! – Mental health museum, Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Mental Asylum Established in mid 2009, Mental Health Museum in Malang is the first and only museum of its kind in Indonesia. Located at Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Lawang Mental Hospital, what used to be a storage warehouse – has now been opened to the public in hopes of increasing awareness, as well as research in mental health. As the size of the museum is considerably small, only 700 items are on display at Mental Health Museum as of now – more than enough to raise the hair on your back. Photo via jelajahmalangku.blogspot What’s on display? Gut twisting documentation in the form of text and pictures that show how much mental health has changed in the past decades. There’s even a collection of straight jackets, shackles of different materials, and even a brain surgery kit! 8. Fall in awe with nature’s masterpiece - Mount Bromo (3 hours from Malang) Words can’t simply describe the beauty of this natural masterpiece! From relishing on a group of volcanoes floating above the sea of clouds to walking on the edge of the active volcanic crater, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is truly a magical once-in-a-lifetime destination! Our journey started at 3 am as our jeep drove through mountainous roads under the pitch dark sky. After a 45-minute ride, we finally stepped off from the jeep at Bukit Penanjakan and man, was it cold! No joke, we were literally shaking and some of us had to rent coats! Photo via Tripcanvas It was almost 10°C at the viewpoint but the cold weather didn’t stop us! We made sure to secure the best spot to catch the spectacular sunrise views so we were there as early was 5.30am after warming ourselves at a local coffee shop. As the sun rose, we were in complete awe – the majestic volcanoes slowly revealed themselves under the warm orange rays, as the surrounding sea of fluffy clouds turned into rugged sand dunes! After sunrise, hop back on your jeep and enjoy a ride through the vast savannah and sea of sand as you make your way to the ultimate spot – Bromo Crater. Once your jeep stops at the foot of the crater, you’ll have to walk for some 15 minutes before reaching the set of stairs that’ll lead you to the crater. From there, you’ll relish on magical views of the surrounding dunes and tick off getting up close to an active volcano crater! In here, you don’t only get below 20°C temperatures but also a magical experience by staying in the clouds. We’ve been here twice and it keeps getting better! Photo via Tripcanvas Photo via Tripcanvas Jawa Timur Park (1 hour from Malang) Indonesia’s most fascinating family theme park Dubbed as East Java’s most iconic amusement park, and possibly one of the best in the country as of now – Jawa Timur Park, or ‘Jatim Park’ for short ranks up to international standards in attractions and maintenance. With so much to show, this amusement park is split into three expansive grounds, each magical in their own way so you might want to spare two or three full days to cover them all. TripCanvas’ Tip: We recommend you to avoid weekends, local public holidays and school holidays while planning your visit to the theme parks, so as to avoid the crowd! 9. Enjoy the endless attractions and hop in the giant pool at Jawa Timur Park 1 First of the many destinations under the Jawa Timur Park Group, Jawa Timur Park 1 offers a good bunch of attractions ranging from the usual stomach-churning amusement parks, to science and history exhibitions that are fully interactive. Photo via miraanggra,oky erik Educative recreation is what the Jawa Timur Park 1 promotes. The attractions in the premises are often linked to either culture, the sciences, or history. An extensive exhibition room called the ‘Galeri Nusantara’ is dedicated to showcasing Indonesia’s variety of ethnicities from Sabang to Merauke. Even its biggest attraction – a gigantic swimming pool is in the theme of the cunning Ken Arok, the king of Singosari (present day Malang). Stretching over 11 hectares on the hill of Malang, you might need a whole day just to try out all the Jawa Timur Park 1’s attractions. You won’t have to worry about not getting enough energy to burn, there are various eateries to choose from spread all over the park. 10. In here, it’s more than just an animal kingdom – Jawa Timur Park 2 Roooooar! Welcome to a magical animal kingdom – Jawa Timur Park 2! This theme park is divided into 3 main parts: Museum Satwa – Indonesia’s largest wildlife museum; Batu Secret Zoo – home to hundreds of exotic animals and; Eco Green Park – a green sanctuary and birds’ paradise. Photo via Tripcanvas We kicked off our visit from Museum Satwa and it was a scene straight out of “Night at the Museum!”! Not only did we find more than 1,000 species of preserved wildlife in their real size, but we also luckily made it in time for their educational play – one that reminded us that there’s no planet B! Photo via Tripcanvas Next, we headed over to Batu Secret Zoo to see the animals come to life! We got to interact with some of the most exotic animals from all over the world (to name a few; black panthers, penguins, and alpaca)! They have different animal zones and we signed up for an exciting safari ride too (the highlight of our visit)! Hear us; the secret zoo is very well-maintained with lots of space for the animals, which seem to be well-taken care of – no poor treatment in sight! Photo via Tripcanvas Last but not least, make your way to the Eco Green Park and learn how to turn waste and trash into interesting exhibits (one of them even made it to 9gag). The venue also serves as a home to several hundreds of bird species! And although we missed the super Instagramable shot at Pigeon World, we did have the chance to feed the birds and penguins! Photo via Tripcanvas 11. Meet dinosaurs, sign up for Hogwarts, enter a futuristic house and more!! - Jawa Timur Park 3 Bring along your magnifying glass and put on your green vest, my friends! Because today we are going to take a journey back to the era of dinosaurs! Our first stop? A magical ride through the Dinosaur eras! Though not particularly long, this ride introduced us to different species of dinosaurs in the various eras! We personally think that this activity would entertain young kids, but note that the presentation at the beginning is in Bahasa Indonesia (the local language). Photo via Tripcanvas After stepping off the car, we got to explore more of the Dino Park from the ice age era, as well as the dino cloning house, baby dino ride and so much more! Photo via Tripcanvas For the next attraction at the Legend Stars Park, you might want to change into something fancy as we are going to meet some superstars! From Hollywood top actors to world-renowned politicians and activists, we were lucky enough to meet some of our celebrity crushes and pose next to them. If you’ve been to a ‘Madame Tussauds” wax museum; you know what we’re talking about! Photo via Tripcanvas And if you’ve been thinking of a round-the-world trip, here’s where you can hop from one continent to the next within a few minutes. Their newest addition in the world tour is the ‘Diagon Alley’, where we got to dress like Harry Potter and friends to battle Voldemort!! Being real Harry Potter fans, we found it to be so much fun! Head to their World Music Museum to witness unique instruments from all over the world or enter their Fun Tech and Infinity World to play with futuristic technologies! And if like us, you like a good scream, their zombie house is here to freak you out! 12. Will you make it through this abandoned mansion?! – Wisma Erni, Lawang, Malang (40 minutes from Malang) 40 minutes from Malang, you’ll get to explore one of Indonesia’s most haunted venues! Resting majestically on top of a hill, it is easy to pick out the colonial influence on the building’s architecture that inspired its construction in the 1990s. In fact, the building was so magnificent that during its time, it was often rented as a hall for weddings and expensive gatherings, but now serves as a makeshift gallery of graffiti. Photo via Nick-Wildson-kasus, ardiardiyannc The name ‘Erni’ is believed to come from the owner of the mansion who mysteriously died not long after the building was completed. Some say she took her own life, while many insist that she was murdered with the mansion’s caretakers. Whatever the cause, it left her husband devastated, which made him return to his country (China), leaving the building to a series of sketchy caretakers. Plunge into an ocean of endless green - Wonosari Tea Plantation (or Wisata Agro Wonosari) A 30 minutes drive north from Malang City will take you to Wonosari tea plantation, a sprawling 950-hectares tea plantation that sits peacefully on the chilly slopes of Mount Arjuna – now is where you’ll feel like in Cameron Highlands! This green oasis is a perfect spot for travellers to rejuvenate their tired mind and soul after a long and intense travelling. After all, what can be more therapeutic than breathing in refreshing crisp air and gazing at such magical endless ocean of green?! Photo via Tripcanvas You can drive around the plantation, or take a tour but we truly recommend you to walk down to Bukit Kuneer, where you’ll find a long wooden bridge overlooking the vast tea plantations. It is quite a rugged landscape so be ready to jump up and down as you drive. Photo via Tripcanvas 14. Sign up for an all-you-can-eat fruit picking! - Kusuma Agrowisata (1 hour from Malang) Known as the country's largest apple producer, one simply shouldn’t miss out on picking fresh apples from the trees at Kusuma Agrowisata while in Malang – they’re one of the pioneers of agrotourism in Indonesia and have opened their orchards to the public since the early 90’s. In here, the air is fresh and crisp – you get to happily connect with nature and spend some fund good times outdoor and eat as many fruits as you want! Photo via Tripcanvas But since it wasn’t the season for apples when we visited, we were welcome to pick enormous juicy guavas instead. Depending on the harvesting season, you’ll also find oranges, dragon fruits, and strawberries. The best part about this place is that a single ticket will grant you access to an all-you-can-eat fruit day and unlimited fun for the kids at the on-site water park! Photo via Tripcanvas The property also features cottages so we stayed the night and we were glad we did as we were one of the very firsts to arrive at the orchard for the fruit picking session! The cottages categories differ but most of them are ideal for families. They also have a honeymoon suite which seems quite romantic too. We stayed at the hotel compounds and woke up to magical views of the surrounding mountains! Normally, apples and strawberries are harvested from December to February. Take your taste buds on a tickling journey around Malang’s unique cafes! Apples aren’t the only delicacies you’ll get to enjoy during your trip around Malang. It also has a history of being a city of leisure – Malang offers a truly unique culinary experience. Take your tastebuds on a journey and indulge in sweet and savoury dishes. We never got hungry there! Here are some of the most fascinating eateries around the city: 15. Settle down at this lavish dining spot with exclusive golf course views - Djati Lounge A traditional Javanese house (Joglo) upgraded with a touch of contemporary and romance - Djati Lounge is an elegant dining spot perfect both your dinner dates and casual hangout moments. The venue is beautifully set against endless views of the nearby Araya Golf Course. Photo by risti.rsb, syafiradp, gabriella_megawati Enjoy the moment with some of their signature dishes such as their Premium Kobe Beef or Grilled Salmon Herb Butter. At times, you’ll also get to enjoy a live-band and the pool view at night doesn’t do justice! However it can get crowded and there’s apparently no reservation system so make sure you drop by slightly before lunch/dinner time! Photo by ayonjajal 16. Where gypsies meet artists and Alice – Madam Wang Secret Garden Once we stepped in, it was as though we had wandered into a whimsical Wonderland, someone’s secret hideout. We entered a lovely greenhouse framed by vines and leaves, strolled through a walkway intricately lined with garden greenery from ceiling to pillars, before entering a colourful indoor seating area decorated with encouraging quotes and gypsy trinkets. And along the way from the greenhouse, tables and seats were scattered and tucked into little spaces, so when you find your spot, you know it’s time to settle down with your book and order one of their refreshing fresh juices (we loved them, some of us even had double servings!). It’s the perfect place to while away the afternoon in that secret spot. Photo by firlandireza, mutiaramalakha, claraangelinast, kerenlalamentik We ordered their Sate Lilit, Sego Ijo Empal (green-chilli fried beef with rice), Ayam Srundeng (chicken with spicy fried coconut flakes), and finished off with a red velvet mille crepe cake and an apple strudel (which was delicious, no surprises since Malang is famous for its apples, and it’s also the most popular item on their menu!). If you too love everything quirky, intricate secret gardens, and gypsy colours, you will find your inspiration at your little corner ;) 17. Embark on a historical culinary experience – Inggil Restaurant From the colonial architecture of the building, to every minutely detailed ornament that brings life to Inggil Restaurant – the only thing modern about this place is the wifi and air-conditioning. Photo via nofiolive, nicolashalim No burgers or spaghetti here, this is the real and authentic Malang. Inggil Restaurant serves only the best Javanese dishes, rich in flavour and spices. One item to look out for is the Grilled Gourami Fish – a favourite from across the country, and refined by chefs of the Inggil Restaurant. A colonial dessert rendezvous – Toko “Oen” As you enter this parlour, you will be instantly greeted by the smell of old rattan furniture and in fact, the building itself will bring you through time! We dropped by in the early evening and settled for their iconic ice cream and really liked the old-fashioned flavours that reminded us of our childhood! Since it is homemade, the ice cream seemed to melt quicker as there’s likely no additives and preservatives – so you know you’re eating the good! Photo via Tripcanvas Our favourite was the Peach Melba that is served with slices of canned peaches – personally for me it felt like when I am at home taking dessert on the couch with the family! If you’re on the lookout for something extravagant, give a try to their Fancy Sundaes that are served generously! 19. Enter a century-old Chinese house! - Loe Mien Toe Café For the history-buffs; if you want to know what a century-old Chinese Babah Peranakan house looks like, you can step right in one at Loe Mien Toe Cafe! Needless to say, the cafe has turned into a hipster hangout spot among teenagers. We dropped by for an early dinner and it was packed to the brim with youngsters. Photo by ayonjajal The cafe is adorned by stunning sets of whimsical antiques as you walk through the old house and settle at what seems to be your grand-mother’s dining table. We had higher expectations for the food - none of what we ordered was exceptional and it took quite some time to come to our table but the ambience alone was quite unique. Come in here for real puppy cuddles!- Pawvillion Dog Café While in Malang, we got a cuddly floof fix at Pawvillion Dog Café! Being real dog lovers, we were more than thrilled to meet Angelo and Pepper the Goldens, Loki the husky, Paddy the Bedlington Terrier, Buby the Beagle and all of their other cute furry friends! It’s almost as if we stepped into ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ movie scene! Photo by TripCanvas, endonesiaaa To be able to play with the dogs, you’ll have to spend a minimum of Rp. 30,000 per person. But since we were quite a big group, we needed to spend a minimum of Rp. 150,000 and the best part yet is that we secured the VIP table and sofas. We were happy to see that the dogs were well-taken care of and the cafe was clean too! 21. Take a glimpse at the ancient Hindu Dynasty - Lembah Tumpang Resort Take a glimpse and step into ancient empires at Lembah Tumpang Resort – this is where you get to immerse in the glorious Majapahit and Sriwijaya dynasties. Aiming to revive the former glory of the ancient Hindu dynasty, the attraction displays a wide collection of ancient relic replicas such as a massive temple in the middle of a lake, or yet some old-looking buildings and more than 1,800 statues! Take a step through time at this living museum – Hotel Tugu Malang Right in the heart of Malang City, Hotel Tugu Malang is where artsy souls and antique lovers find their delight. This venue is truly more than just a hotel - It’s a living museum where you can immerse in the history of the traditional Javanese Babah Peranakan! Photo via Tripcanvas In fact, the owner – Mr Anhar Setjadibrata is an antique collector and only built hotels around Indonesia to place in his collection (which was getting to big for his house). His soul and passion for art and heritage is perfectly illustrated around the property – from rooms to restaurants! Photo via Tripcanvas We visited the hotel and it was as if we were walking around a museum - every corner of the property was unique in its own way, mystical and magical all at the same time – it was a voyage through time! We truly recommend you to sign up for a hotel tour package that comes with a dining voucher at their on-site Melati Tugu Restaurant. Photo via Tripcanvas Besides, Mr Anhar’s passions aren’t limited to art, but also to culinary! You’ll get a taste of it at the hotel’s restaurants. We personally tried, tasted and approved their Asian fusion restaurant – Saigon San! With a throwback to the Khmer Angkorian Empire, we indulged in an exotic Indochina culinary experience set in a one-of-a-kind ambiance. The menu here boasts a wide selection of Thai and Vietnamese delicacies with recipes straight from the origin countries. We tasted some of their menu here but the Green Curry Patin and Cha Ca La Vong (Hanoi turmeric fish) were clearly the show stealer - the tender fish had perfectly soaked up their special sauce so it was an explosion of flavours! For a sweet ending, don’t miss out their delectable ‘Torched Ginger Flower Sorbet’ - it is reasonably sweet but also a little spicy; something out of the ordinary! Photo via Tripcanvas 23. Take a trip down to Istanbul at this blue mosque - Masjid Tiban (1 hour from Malang) We had seen this Instagrammable religious place on social media and although located 1 hour from Malang, we made sure to check it out! We were actually surprised that it was in a remote village, in the middle of nowhere! Masjid Tiban is a hidden architectural gem located in the lesser known region of Turen. Rumour has it that the mosque was built by spirits in just one night. But this is just a myth as during our visit, our guide explained that this mosque actually served as an Islamic boarding school under the name of Syalafiyah Bihaaru Bahri’ Asali Fadlaairil Rahmah - built in 1978 by Romo Kiai Ahmad! We highly recommend you to opt for a guide to get the story of the location and to bring you around the different storeys of the mosque. Photo via Tripcanvas With vibrant blue exteriors and perfectly-detailed interiors, this ten-floor mosque will remind you of a Persian Kingdom – this is why tourists from different religious backgrounds have been swarming here to take photos. Photo via Tripcanvas Mind you, it will take some time to explore the building as you have to take several staircases to visit floor by floor – each storey has a different interior design, purpose and story! 24. Go on a foodie journey at a hipster night market! - Alun-Alun Batu Night Market (1 hour from Malang) Packed with nostalgic childhood treats and trendy hipster stalls, Alun-Alun Batu is where you can find Batu’s unique version of Bangkok’s bustling night markets. This is easily one of the best night markets we found in Indonesia – a place where you can immerse in the lively local nightlife and hunt for unique street food! Our greatest finds here are their delicious Telur Gulung (omelette skewer), crazy spicy Indomie, and jumbo crepes that were actually bigger than my face. Photo via Tripcanvas Join in the longest queue at the night market – you don’t want to miss the most legendary dessert stall in town - Pos Ketan Leganda, opened in the late 60’s – their sticky glutinous rice that comes with wide variations of toppings is truly one of a kind; make sure you order the durian and cheese version! Photo via Tripcanvas The night market was bigger than we thought and there are tons of stalls to discover in small alleys, you’ll also find healthier options like fresh fruit juice and yogurt drinks. A trip there might well be the highlight of your visit around Malang! 25. Explore a picture-worthy pine forest in the hills – Goa Pinus, Batu (1 hour from Malang) Imagine a beautiful pine forest in the hills leading all the way to a cave! Welcome to Goa Pinus. Goa Pinus has been making the buzz on social media because of its distinct pine forest and panoramic view of Batu city. With the cool fresh air refreshing your mind and body, the walk to Goa Pinus itself is actually pretty enjoyable. Photo via juwitaprmdn, atarizky_ Although this place was initially known for its sand-mining activities, it has morphed into a dreamy tourist spot for Instagrammers and photographers. The entrance itself is so photogenic – the branches have curved in an admirable frame. The best part is the viewing platform, which takes your eyes across acres of breathtaking greenery. The pleasant sight of the hills gives way to beautiful rice fields, making this the perfect relaxation spot. 26. Wander through the iconic rainbow village of Malang - Kampung Jodipan, Tridi, and Biru Arema Before 2016, Kampung Jodipan and Tridi were nothing more than a dull slum area. But the fate of this village changed after a group of students from the local university proposed to paint the village with murals and colourful hues. Now, almost every part of these villages have turned into a perfect frame for photographers. The best way to start exploring Kampung Jodipan is from Brantas road bridge, where you can see the colourful rainbow village on one side and the blue village on the other side. And if you’re lucky like us, you may even catch a sight of the local trains departing from the nearby station on the Brantas bridge. Photo via Tripcanvas As we made our way down to the village, we found colourful props for more pictures – umbrellas, masks street, and a 3D painting area. A short stroll from the 3D painting area also brought us to the highlight of this village where a glass suspension bridge rests above the river. Across the bridge is where we found Kampung Tridi – yet another rainbow village. Photo via Tripcanvas 27. Spend the night up a tree! – Omah Kayu Paralayang, Batu (1 hour 15 minutes from Malang) The biggest attraction of Omah Kayu has to be the stunning views in the morning and evening. This is where inspiration will hit you hardest. Located at Kota Batu Malang, a beautiful hilltop 1,340 metres above sea level, the air is clean and fresh, and the weather isn’t as humid as in the city. There are 6 treehouses (equipped with proper fencing), and each has the capacity to comfortably sleep three people – perfect for small families and gatherings with friends. However, the bathrooms are outdoors (not in the room), but they’re equipped with hot water. Photo via missnovitakusuma, redhaqadiani This hideaway is pretty far from the busy streets of downtown Malang and Batu (approximately 25km away), but it is situated near Hill Para, a beautiful hiking location. 28. Get lost in a labyrinth! – Coban Rondo Maze, Pujon (1 hour 30 minutes from Malang) One of the more unique places to visit in Malang is the maze at Coban Rondo Leisure Park. Challenge your friends and family by figuring out how to reach the fountain garden in the middle of the labyrinth the fastest possible. Mind you, don’t underestimate the size of the maze, as it is pretty challenging! Photo via bebepikasf, murnimuri, Ricky-Liew The symmetric hedge walls are 2 metres tall, and will surely bring out the enthusiasm of any Instagrammer. Do keep in mind that the park is known to become quite crowded, especially during weekends – to the point where it is difficult to get a decent picture without being photobombed! (Get there before 10am to avoid the crowd.) Apart from the maze, the park is also home to Coban Rondo Waterfall which stands at almost 90 metres. Regular outbound activities are also available on premises, including ziplines and even a paintball arena! 29. Enjoy a view of galactic proportions – Metingen Hill (3 hours from Malang) Still under the tourist radar, Metingen Hill is the best spot for travellers to gaze at the striking Milky Way in Bromo. Accompanied by singing bugs and the soothing smell of grass, the view here will surely help you obtain a good night’s sleep. Just make sure you get down before you doze off (unless you have a tent with you)! But with so many to explore, we’ve picked our favourite ones around: 30. Swing towards the waterfall- Coban Putri (1 hour from Malang) Fancy swinging high in the air with a waterfall in the background? Coban Putri is your dream come true. Bring your family and friends for a fun outing or go solo to enjoy a relaxing trip. Located in Tlekung Village of Junrejo Sub-District, Coban Putri boasts with clear waters, which makes it perfect for a dip in. You can even sit on a swing right beside the waterfall! Where the rainbow falls over the waterfall – Coban Talun (1 hour from Malang) Located on the slopes of Mount Arjuna, at a height of 75 metres, Coban Talun is nothing short of an exotic destination. About 15 kilometres away from the city of Malang, in the village of Tulungrejo, lies this mysterious waterfall which appears as though it’s out of a movie set. If you are in luck and the weather is sunny, you may even be able to catch a rainbow! Photo by mariolaisina, ronnyang Your journey starts from a dam where the water flows down uniformly like a sheet. Take a dip and freshen up here if you like. Then, continue your journey to reach the main waterfall, which gushes down amidst tall cliffs and rocks. For the more daring souls, you can even organize a camping trip here. Photo by ghrenademesc, engginovanaryen93, ab_indrawijaya TripCanvas’ Tip: Make sure you choose a bright and sunny day for this trip and wear comfortable shoes as you will need to hike on a challenging terrain that is rocky and slippery. You will also need to cross a river to reach the waterfall. 32. Get lost at one of the largest and most exotic waterfalls – Sumber Pitu Waterfall, Pujon (1 hour 30 minutes from Malang) Hidden deep in the rainforest of the Pujon district, is a collection of 14 waterfalls, including the Sumber Pitu waterfall, or Grojogan Pitu waterfall, as some would call it. (Not to be mistaken with the Sumber Pitu waterfall in the Tumpang District, East of the city) Known to be one of the largest and the most exotic in the area – getting to Sumber Pitu waterfall is no easy task. It involves some heavy trekking through a slippery jungle floor, with trenches right beside the trail in some places! Photo via annsadp, anomharya, erisarendita It isn’t all bad though; before getting to Sumber Pitu waterfall, visitors will come across Tunggal waterfall. A great place to catch their breath after an hour’s hike, and a lovely preview of what’s coming ahead. Once you reach Sumber Pitu Waterfall, you’ll see a layer of moss and fern coating an entire rock wall of the waterfall, perfectly complementing the blue waters and the brownish-red clay soil. Take a moment to soak in the views, or better yet, literally soak in Sumber Pitu’s refreshing water. It certainly looks and feels like a scene right out of Jurassic Park! 33. Feel the rumbling of the Earth beneath your feet! – Mount Semeru, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (1 hour 45 minutes from Malang) Soaring 3,676 meters above sea level, Mount Semeru, (also known as ‘Mahameru’ to locals) meaning ‘The Great Mountain’, is the highest peak on the island of Java. Mount Semeru is considered as the benchmark for intermediate hikers, requiring at least three days to climb up and back down on average, as well as proper physical conditions. The hike begins at Ranupane Village, where visitors can stack up on supplies and rest before taking on the ‘Great Mountain’ the next day. The first leg of the journey ends at Ranukumbolo, a mesmerizing lake 2400 meters above sea level, and surrounded by hills of green. Most hikers will set up camp for the day, and those brave enough to challenge the cold are welcome to take a dip in its refreshing waters. Photo via Mansyur-Hasan-W, seteveaxford Right after Ranukumbolo, hikers will come across ‘Tanjakan Cinta’ hill, where it is believed that climbing the hill in one go (without stopping to rest) will bring eternal love. Photo via khamis_balasad, M-Reza-Faisal, arditafanisa At the end of the tiring climb, hikers will be instantly rewarded by the Oro-oro Ombo meadow, decorated with Edelweiss flowers – the symbol for eternity, as well as the Verbana Barisliensis Vell, a Lavender look-alike only found here in Indonesia. Since Mount Semeru is currently an active volcano, camping around the summit is prohibited as its gaseous fumes are proven to be lethal. To conquer the Mahameru, hikers will have to camp at Kalimati and start climbing at 2am in total darkness. And if this isn’t intimidating enough, on the final leg of the ‘summit attack’, large falling boulders are known to injure many hikers. Explore the coastline with Malang’s exquisite beaches! Besides the volcanic mountains of Bromo Tengger National Park, you get your ocean fix too in Malang. Stretching all the way down to the southern sea, Malang displays a fair share of exotic beaches along its coastline. Beautiful, yet rugged, the waves and currents here are so powerful that they have sculpted natural coral cliffs! Among the dozens of beaches around Southern Malang, here are a few we consider rather worth the trip down: 34. Malang’s very own Tanah Lot – Balekambang Beach (2 hours from Malang) It isn’t hard to understand why Balekambang Beach is often called Malang’s ‘Tanah Lot’ by the locals – with its very own gorgeous temple, Amerta Jati. Sitting gracefully on Ismoyo Island, Amerta Jati was built to accommodate the Hindu ceremony of ‘Suroan’ – an offering to commemorate the Javanese/Islamic New Year. But sunset isn’t the only time to enjoy Balekambang Beach. During low tide, the sea retreats, unveil the coral stones that extend beyond the sand, flaunting the colours of its coral flora. Go ahead and do a little exploration, and let brightly coloured fishes tickle your feet, as they weave in and out of the coral garden! Photo via wimardywijaya, riandikanugr Stretching 2km over mostly flat sand, Balekambang Beach provides an excellent panoramic view of the 3 beaches off its shore – named after the famous Wayang leather puppets, Anoman, Wisanggeni, and Ismoyo. 35. This beach is multi-coloured! - Pantai Tiga Warna (2 hours 15 minutes from Malang) Located in a conservation area, reservations for an entry permit have to be made at least a week before (a month if you are planning a weekend trip) to ensure not too many visitors crowd the area. The clear gradation of the water’s blue, green and almost-white colours from the sandy beaches is not the only fascinating sight in this part of Malang. The journey is a pleasure of its own. Start at Clungup Mangrove Conservation – a mangrove forest located right at the mouth of a river. Besides just protecting waves from eroding the beaches, they also provide welcome protection against the sun. After a short walk southwards, you can choose to rest, grab a snack from the canteen, or even set up a camp. Don’t get too caught up though – there is still an hour’s trek to the main attraction, but that won’t be too much trouble since the stroll along the coastline will keep you in great spirit with the sand and sea on the right and lush greenery on the left. After an uphill climb, you will finally set eyes on the tricoloured beach. The irresistible shade of mermaid turquoise (bluish green) waters will make you want to jump right in! Photo via roni_inst, saseart But before that, do take a moment to soak in this bizarre phenomenon of nature. With crystal clear waters, coral reefs can be seen more vividly if you decide to snorkel. 36. Enter a spiritual cave at this beach! – Pantai Rowo Indah / Pantai Goa China (Chinese Cave Beach) (2 hours 15 minutes from Malang) With 3 islands decorating the horizon, the sight of the setting sun from Rowo Indah Beach is quite a spectacle to take in. It’s so breathtaking that many forget the chilling history behind this small patch of sand that’s located 90 minutes from Malang. Rowo Indah Beach (which means Chinese Cave Beach) was popularised as ‘Pantai Goa Cina’ after an eerie discovery some good amount of years ago. A corpse was found with Chinese inscriptions on the walls of a cave, believed to be the remains of a monk who meditated to his death. Photo via davidchendra With strong currents and waves, it isn’t recommended to dip in the sea at Pantai Goa Cina but fortunately Ngliyep Beach (located in the same area) provides far more calmer waters with its crescent bay, along with trees that provide shelter. 37. Take a step on the moon or on Mars! - Pantai Mbehi & Teluk Bidadari (2 hours 15 minutes from Malang) This is the closest you can get to actually feel like you’re walking on the moon! Pantai Mbehi can put all the other pretty beaches to shame with its turquoise waters, white sands and beautiful protected forests that it’s located beyond. The reason you should go to this beach is the rare natural phenomenon that it hides. Firstly, prepare to be startled by this special “crater” with a hole in the middle, that gives an impression of a giant coral opening into the sea. Photo via anik_dwi_kumalasari, Andy__bv Secondly, not far from the crater, one can come across the Gulf of Angels (Teluk Bidadari) – a niche in the rocks that forms a shallow natural pool. A great spot to soak in, against the backdrop of the great Indian Ocean and its mesmerising views. 38. Discover a waterfall by the beach - Pantai Banyu Anjlok (3 hours from Malang) Move over infinity pools – here’s a natural pool at the top of a waterfall, where you can take your next hit Instagram picture! (Yes, it can definitely beat those 5-star pools you end up spending a bomb at, and it’s all natural.) Indulge in nature at its best in the calming waters of this natural pool. Dive in and out of the waterfall, and feast your eyes on a mesmerising sunset. Photo via lenggoksono The beach is so extraordinary and exclusive, it might just be one of the best discoveries you’ll make while around Malang. Have your very own Columbus moment when you set foot here, and let your social media following go berserk! Soar with the eagles – Paragliding at Gunung Banyak, Batu (1 hour from Malang) Ever wondered how it feels to fly like a bird above mountains? To glide in the open air as you sweep your hands through soft clouds? For those looking for a sensational activity that is quite out of the ordinary, a rush of adrenaline, or vacation photos that will impress your friends – paragliding might just be the answer. Over farmlands and small towns, paragliding truly is a way to see the city of Malang from a different angle. Go on a foodie trail and try out authentic local food in Malang! One of the greatest discoveries during road trip around East Java was that Malang actually is a culinary paradise! We tried out an array of local foods and were never disappointed! Here’s how to never go hungry when in Malang: 40. Tasty to its last drop - Soto Lombok Finding a bowl of Soto is barely a challenge when in Indonesia but one that is iconic in Malang is Soto Lombok! This legendary stall has been boiling soup as early as 1955 but don’t be fooled though, Soto Lombok doesn’t mean Soto from Lombok but rather a Soto stall opened along Lombok Street! As a soup lover, I got to say this is probably one of the top five sotos that I have ever tasted across Indonesia. The soup is rich in flavour and the salted egg just takes it to the next level! Throw in some of their homemade Koya (garlic and prawn cracker powder) and chilli – now you have a divine bowl of warm soup goodness! Photo via Tripcanvas 41. Go back to your childhood with nostalgic snacks - Puthu Lanang I still can’t forget how excited my ten-year-old self was every time “Mas Puthu” with his iconic bicycle drove past our house late at night – that often meant that we’ll get some delectable dessert before bed! However, as time passed by, those traditional childhood snacks became rare so whenever I manage to find them nowadays, I tend to get pretty excited (to say the least!). When in Malang, we discovered this secret Puthu stall hidden inside an alley. Opened since 1935, this dessert stall turned out to be local's favourite spot to hunt for the legendary Puthu (brown sugar wrapped in rice flour with grated coconut). It was an absolute pleasure to see the art and talent behind making those delicacies, they were served fresh and warm. Even the coconut is grated on the spot! One thing is for sure – this will take you on a journey through your comforting childhood days! Photo via Tripcanvas 42. Chomp down on the biggest satay ever ! - Sate Gebug This modest little shop with interiors straight out of the 80’s has been serving enormous and incredibly tasty satay for more than 100 years (and counting)! You’ll be seated on basic benches, with barely any comfort but this is where one gets to share lunch with a local! Every dish here is made upon order so once you’ve chosen from the menu, you get to immerse in a live cooking experience as your gigantic satays are placed on the grill. We thoroughly enjoyed the taste and tenderness of the meat that just fell off from the skewer. Photo via Tripcanvas The sweet lady at the shop told us that one of their secrets is that they only use sirloin steak and all of their sauces and side dishes are all homemade! If it wasn’t for their dedication in making great and amazing dishes; guess we won’t ever be able to find such tasty satays here in Malang! 43. A food court in the basement of a temple?!- Klenteng Eng An Kiong We’ve found quite a good amount of hidden food stops on our travels but this one takes over the crown. Located on the compounds of a Chinese temple is a food court with scrumptious delicacies. We don’t mean to say that they’re stalls outside the temple but rather; they’re hidden in the basement! Drop by and tick off the food stalls around to try out an array of local street food. However what’s not to be missed is the Ote-Ote (Vegetable and meat puff) from Warung Steven! The fried delicacy is perfectly stuffed with meat, veggies and secret spices. Our favourite was the seaweed flavour; although all of them were delectable! Order at least five of them to get to see the whole making process from your bare eyes! Photo via Tripcanvas 44. Dare put a hundred of bees on your face?! - Wisata Petik Madu Lawang We always thought bees would sting no matter what but looks like when you’re gentle enough, they’re kind to you to – yes to the point of letting you hold a whole bunch of them! When in Malang, we dared to hold hundreds of warm and furry bees in our bare hands! You can even choose to place them on your face or anywhere else! Yes, having hundreds of warm and furry bees swamping on your hand may sound like one of the challenges from Fear Factor, but we actually tried (and survived) this nerve-wracking experience! In fact, nothing to be worried about as you'll be guided by bee experts from Wisata Petik Madu Lawang! The secret is to always be gentle and not do any sudden movements around the bees. Photo via Tripcanvas Aside from getting up real close with the bees, we also enjoyed learning all about honey production and even tried out the waxing process! It’s quite a fun place to check out and they also sell various kinds of fresh pure honey, while you can even try some of their honeycomb! We’ve eventually packed some home! Go hunt for the best edible souvenirs Apple chips, strudel, coffee and more! One simply can’t leave Malang without a few bags of apple chips! At least that’s what we’ve packed as souvenirs for friends and relatives! But besides, there are also other sweet tasty gifts you could consider: 45. The heaven of fruit chips - Lancar Jaya Sanan Malang We have tasted several fruit chips in Malang and we have to say that we prefer the ones at Lancar Jaya. The chips here taste fresh and they’re the crunchiest! They also come with an affordable price tag as compared to other touristy outlets. We tried their apple chips, banana chips, as well as jack fruit chips and loved them all! Photo via Tripcanvas 46. Malang most iconic coffee powder - Sidomukti Coffee Shop We found out about this spot from our local Indonesian colleague (whom we call our ‘walking encyclopedia’). Sidomukti Coffee Shop has now become our must-stop destination to pile up our coffee stock while in Malang! Photo alstarina.s, dantybogy You know you’ve reached this quaint coffee shop when the wonderful aroma of freshly ground coffee hits your nose. The fresh grounded coffee bean has a smooth coffee taste (not too acidic), followed by rich and deep aftertaste. 47. Bring back home Malang’s sweet apple delicacies – Malang Strudel Malang Strudel is where you’ll be able to stock up on the legendary apple strudel. These delicacies come in various versions and flavours and we thoroughly enjoyed it’s taste – not too sweet, yet fresh, flaky on the outside and soft on the inside. The outlet also sells several other snacks that are unique to the region; in fact it is a one-stop souvenir shop! Photo via Tripcanvas, iin_rifah Where to stay in Malang With so much to do around Malang, you’ll need a comfortable place to come back to after a whole day of exploring. While there’s a bunch of accommodation around the city, we were on the lookout for one that is conveniently located. Since there were 6 of us, we opted for an Airbnb with 3 bedrooms – Kedawungville was a safe option to go with; it was located in a gated residential community and had very homey (and Instagrammable) vibes. Photo via Tripcanvas Rooms were stylish, equipped with air conditioning and there were two bathrooms, along with a comfortable living room (where we spent most of our time). They also have a small kitchen with all basic necessities and the best part yet was the washing machine which was of great use on our 14-day road trip around East Java. Getting Around You can explore Malang city easily with online taxi services such as GOJEK and Grab. But if you are travelling around different areas, we recommend you to rent a car instead. Renting a car without a driver/ with driver During our trip to East Java, we rented a private car and decided to self-drive as we’re quite familiar with the roads in Indonesia. We were happy with the services received from ‘Yes rent car ‘and the vehicle was in a very good condition too. If you’re not confident about driving in Indonesia, opt for their car rental services with driver provided and enjoy a worry-free trip in the highlands!
