Few can resist the allure of the Nusa Islands, particularly Nusa Penida. Located a short 30-minute boat ride from mainland Bali, the island has all the ingredients of a wholesome tropical getaway: stunning beaches, countless natural wonders and breathtaking views.

For now, Nusa Penida remains relatively undeveloped and you will find only a limited number of hotels here – but potentially none more scenic and romantic than MĀUA Nusa Penida, where you can stay in one of their 25 stunning private pool villas. From here, enjoy prime views across Gamat Bay or Mount Agung.

1. Wake up among the mountains – Oculus Bali

Bali is undoubtedly the best-known island of Indonesia, but you can still get off the beaten track and away from the crowds – as long as you know where to look. The region of Kintamani in particular, has long been a popular gateway for those visiting the iconic Mount Batur.

The area is full of natural reserves and the cool temperatures make it ideal for a quick respite from the usual heat and humidity of South Bali. It’s also not as well developed as the south, so you can step right into the local lifestyle.

Kintamani is also still very dependent on farming. Like a voyage through time, you’ll notice there are still a lot of farmers working in the fields and because they use mostly organic fertilizers, there seems to be quite a number of flies in the region. But maybe, that’s also something that makes up the authentic charm of Kintamani…

Beyond its natural delights, Kintamani has recently seen several hotels, restaurants and cafes popping up, making it a great place to spend a night or two.

And this year (2022) is a great one because Kintamani hosted the opening of the incredible Oculus hotel. With a total of 10 suites, an infinity hot pool, a spa along with 3 restaurants, this stay sets a new benchmark for the region.

As if that wasn’t enough, you also get some of the most wonderful mountain views from here and especially from its rooftop terrace. Book a Royal Suite for a big surprise, we won’t say more…

2. Front-row seats guaranteed! – Ayodya Batur Villa

Undoubtedly, the focal point at this property is the fact that it sits right in front of Bali’s one and only Mount Batur – an active volcano that’s also believed to be sacred. The majestic Batur caldera is a UNESCO Global Geopark Heritage and basking in its views from your stay is an indescribable feeling!

Photo Via TripCanvas

The villa boasts three different types of rooms. Each villa is different in appearance and amenities, but one of the few essential commonalities they share is the unparalleled volcano view. For couples, you may want to consider the Ayodya Suite Room which is equipped with a bathtub and private terrace.

Photo Via Maral_kabbassova, Tripcanvas

The villa may be in a remote area of Bali but it features its very own restaurant so you don’t have to worry about stepping out for food. The varied menu offers everything from Western dishes like burgers, spaghetti, pancakes and sandwiches to local Indonesian meals like the iconic Nasi Goreng (fried rice).

3. You’d forget you’re in Bali – Hideaway Glamping

Set at the foot of Mount Batur, Hideaway Glamping has got views that are literally worth traveling for. There are only three tents on the property so you’ll have to be lucky to score the best one in the house…

Photo Via Her_journeys

Whether you check into the Mandala or Madya tent, the sweeping views of the lake and mountain on the horizon will have you question your current location – so much so that you’d even forget you’re in Bali.

Photo Via Her_journeys, Auliaputry

There is also the dreamy Mediterrani tent from which you can enjoy Kintamani’s greenery and still have access to the pool. Each tent is equipped with its very own bathroom and all other necessities to ensure your comfort. They also come with an air cooler just in case it gets too warm – not that you really have to worry as it is usually chilly in the Kintamani region.

4. Like in Switzerland – Lake Garden Bali

There can be few views as the ones offered at Lake Garden Bali. Sitting right on the shores of Lake Batur, the stay offers exclusive access to one of Bali’s most breathtaking landscapes. It’s a view guests get to enjoy from every corner of the property – the rooms, terrace, hot tub and infinity pool.

The area is remarkably peaceful and quiet. There are no restaurants or shops in the surroundings so we’d recommend you come prepared with snacks, although the hotel does offer room service and there is also the possibility of setting up a barbeque.

There’s also only 7 cylindrical rooms, so it’s really just you and a few others enjoying the amazing feeling of remoteness along with some of the most enchanting views. There’s so much to look out for that you might not want to go to bed at all. Not that it gets any less magical at night, as chances are you’re in for a stargazing treat!

The view from the bed, you guys. THE VIEW FROM THE BED! Can you imagine waking up to anything more beautiful (and in Bali, for that matter)?

I hate to say it friends, but it’s not enough to simply go somewhere unexceptionally ‘nice’ anymore. Oh no. Instagram went and ruined that for all of us. Now, if we’re going to go on holiday in Bali, it feels like we’re obliged to visit somewhere super cool, somewhere with endless ocean views from your bed and complemented with interiors that are inspired by Pinterest maybe? Somewhere called Le Cliff, for sure.

Cheeky groups of monkeys are often spotted in the area so make sure you close your balcony door whenever you head out!

6. You’ll love meditating here! – Bella Kita Mountain Retreat & Spa

Bella Kita Mountain Retreat & Spa is your getaway to one of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Bali. The resort is the ideal place to escape the stress of the modern world. It is as though you are stepping back to Bali 20 years ago. Checking in here means you sign up for jaw-dropping views of the surrounding mountains and lush forests.

Photo Via Stepanhlinka95, Performancesst

As it is set in practically untouched scenery, you will feel as though you have walked right into a fairytale that’s in perfect harmony with nature. On the interior of your villa, you’ll find antique furnishings, natural elements and original artworks from a local Balinese artist, along with magnificent vistas of endless forests from the hillside.

What really is the spectacle at Bella Kita Mountain Retreat & Spa is its expansive infinity pool that is beautifully adorned with a giant 4-metre-tall stone Buddha statue. Take a dip and enjoy the vast forest lying before you, outlined by the ocean and Lembongan Island resting in the background.

15. Plunge into a three-storey infinity pool! – The Kayon Jungle Resort

What would be your definition of a top resort? Because this one right here even features its own jungle pool club and bar!

During peak seasons, it is almost impossible to secure a room at The Kayon Jungle Resort but there are obvious reasons for that. The resort is simply spectacular. It is not difficult to see why it is so popular on social media either – look at this stunning view across the valley and their fabulous main pool that is tiered over three levels, presumably mimicking the rice terraces for which Ubud is famous for.

Photo Via Daleydavis, Thelosttwo
Photo Via X_tyna, Stef_fi_3, Nabdic

The property takes full advantage of the natural abundance and the best part yet is that it is an adults-only resort (no kids allowed!) so you can peacefully take in all of the jungle sounds!

The surroundings are on par with some of the bigger chain hotels over on the Sayan Ridge. The only thing is that the resort is pretty far from the main tourist attractions. However, they do provide a complimentary shuttle to take you to Ubud Central, which makes it very convenient if you are planning to explore!

To say the least, the resort was deemed as “easily the best part of an entire trip to Bali” by several guests! We’ve also heard that there’s nothing the team at The Kayon can’t solve. Replace the coke in your minibar with coke light? Consider it done! Prefer croissant to toast? Also possible!
