Medan may be known as “only” the 3rd biggest city in Indonesia, but it’s no exaggeration to call it the Number 1 culinary paradise!

Located in North Sumatra, Medan is a prime destination to source for the most unique and delicious dishes of all kinds. With a variety of mouth-watering choices influenced by different ethnicity and cultures, you can find street food with Chinese, Arab, local Malay and Bataknese vibes that will give you a flavourful experience (for a fraction of the price you can get in Singapore and Malaysia too)!

Getting Around

Traveling around Medan by public transport usually takes twice the time it would take if you drive, as sights and attractions are located far from one another. For this reason, we highly recommend travellers to opt for reliable car rental options with driver/guide or without, if you are familiar with driving in Indonesia!

Best options include:

1. Renting a car with private driver/tour guide (Our recommendation)

Reviewed for their excellent service and reliability, Yoga Rent a Car Medan offers car rental services with various transportation options and ideal for 3 to 12 people! All their  vehicles below are insured and are in good condition!

Hire a driver or driver with guide to get around the island privately and enjoyably while you relax in the comfort of your vehicle and get to know about your surroundings with insights from the knowledgeable guide!

Yoga Rent a Car Medan (with driver/guide)

Price: From Rp. 300,000 per day (Toyota Agya or similar) (Approximately USD $22)
Address: Jl. Kamboja, Komplek Permata Setiabudi No.1 , Tanjung Rejo, Medan 20132

*Note: Prices differ based on the number of people travelling (type of car required) and tour itinerary.

2. Renting a car without driver

If you prefer freedom, flexibility and travelling at your own pace, you might want to consider self-driving car rental services from Yoga Rent a Car Medan itself.

Tip: If you are unfamiliar with Indonesia’s roads and traffic, we strongly recommend you to rent a car with driver instead, as the road conditions might be challenging to navigate, and fellow drivers might not be easy to deal with!

Yoga Rent a Car Medan (self-drive)

Price: From Rp. 200,000 per day (Toyota Agya or similar) (Approximately USD $14)
Address: Jl. Kamboja, Komplek Permata Setiabudi No.1 , Tanjung Rejo, Medan 20132

Best time to travel

Medan is generally warm and rainy almost all year round, though you can generally expect the rain to last only a few hours (i.e. in the evenings). Because of this, any time is good for travelling around Medan. But if you are planning to go on adventurous hikes and treks in North Sumatra, we recommend travelling during the warmer seasons from April to October. Mid April to May is the hottest period, when the temperature can reach up to 40°C.

November to late March is the rainy season, though the temperature would generally not dip below 23°C.

Avoid travelling during public holidays unless you want to be caught in the traffic jams and crowd!

If you plan to travel to Lake Toba area, do remember to check the volcanic activity before going. Mount Sibayak has been erupting from time to time, and there have been regular earthquakes due to changes in the climate. So it’s important to check when it’s safe to go!

This story would not have been possible without the support of Indonesia Tourism Board. For more information, check out Medan’s official website.

31. Slurping Down the Best Tiong Sim Noodle – Mie Pangsit Tiongsim, Selat Panjang

One of the longest standing food stalls in Medan, Tiong Sim Noodle at Selat Panjang has been in business since 1940.

Serving long thin noodles that are perfect for some noisy slurping, this comfort food is filled with chicken meat, sweet pork, fat wontons, and loads of fried shallot. Add the chopped pickled red chillies, and there you have it – the best Tiong Sim noodle in Medan.

32. The Un-Bee-lievably Sweet Honeycomb Dessert from Medan – Bika Ambon Zulaikha

Bika Ambon Medan has evolved much over the years from the original version. With a porous and chewy texture, traditional liquor is also infused into this yellowish dessert to create its signature fragrant flavour.

You can find this sweet snack along the entire Mojopahit street, but you can’t go wrong with Zulaikha, the biggest player in town. But, to be honest, this is so good that you can basically get it anywhere – no disappointment guaranteed!

33. Fluffy Roll Cake with Too Many Fillings to Count – Bolu Meranti

Bolu Meranti does it right every time with soft melt-in-your-mouth cakes that are rolled with super generous fillings. Many love the cheese version, which is also loaded with cream and extra diced cheese blocks. But we can’t get enough of the chocolate, mocca, blueberry, pineapple and other flavours too, so we say… get them all!
