Welcome to Canggu. Oh wait, you’re only allowed in the Gu if you pronounce it correctly. So repeat after me: “Chan-goo”. Now, you’re set!

This hip little coastal village in South Bali has long been a surfers’ hideout but is now so very distinct for its unique quirky personality, titling itself as “Bali’s hipster central”.

As some of our team members are real Canggu lovers, we sure have cool stuff to tell you about this area that is just full of swag and hot shirtless surfers walking around with their equally good-looking ladies (sadly!).

Typically, a hip hotspot requires quirky smart cafes, boutiques and delis selling the now-obligatory avocado on (sourdough) toast (but now probably replaced by “Kombucha”) – which seems to have become a byword for hipster culture. And that is obviously what Canggu masters! Once you’re here, you get to indulge in its superb coffee and foodie offerings, cool retail, artsy vibes and, of course, a density of well-groomed beards showing off on dirt-bikes.

Home to some of the best Indonesian food in Bali – Plataran at Canggu

While Indonesian food may not come off as ‘hipster’, there’s certainly an undeniable charm that comes from Plataran at Canggu which makes you want to head in and settle down for a night of traditional local cuisine.

Nowhere does beach clubs better than Bali (well, except Ibiza maybe?) and Canggu sure has also been pulling its weight in the beach club department! So when you’re hanging out around the island’s trendiest hotspot, don’t miss checking the vibes at Alternative Beach.

Fancy a cocktail on a daybed by the pool? Or an exciting fun time sliding down to the pool or better yet – an indulging moment in a jacuzzi with soothing views? Well technically, it has no beach, it is more of a pool club but you get the whole beach club shebang and more if you get what I mean.

In 2019, the club’s New Year’s resolution includes coming up with their very own on-site spa so you know where to put a nap after a few Bintangs by the pool while getting a relaxing massage!

With a swimming pool, sun deck, fun slide and swing, pool bar, jacuzzi, restaurant and more, Alternative Canggu is one of the best alternatives for heading down to the beach. Not to mention, happy hour rings from 4pm to 6pm daily.

9. Aye Aye Captain – La Brisa

La Favela, La Laguna or La Plancha? Too cliché for you? Head straight up to their newest sibling and beach club – La Brisa!

When all you want is to escape the Bali inferno and only a dreamy place will do, sail away to La Brisa. Nothing gets better than a comforting plate of seafood right by the beach.

If weekend brunch in Canggu is a religious ritual, La Brisa (with its dizzying array of seafood options) is Bali’s super church.

Load up your plate and enjoy a leisurely seafood feast while gazing out at the sea and sipping on a piping hot coffee. The best part? You can work it all off with a stand-up paddleboarding session at Echo Beach afterwards.

La Brisa is themed around a vintage fisherman’s house, so you’ll find fishing nets, fishing baskets, wooden boats and also a touch of whimsy such as splashy bean bags and everything to make you escape from reality!

They’ve got a pool you can enjoy but believe us, all you’ll want is to put your feet up, sit back and enjoy the ocean view and refreshing sea breeze!

Just like its siblings, La Brisa is in an open-air setting, so you’ll find plenty of seating options and space, as well as countless photogenic spots! A loud call to all hip creatives out there!

10. Hipsters throw axes like Vikings, not simple darts! – Mother Huckers

This axe-throwing activity is currently trending in Canggu and we bet it is because it takes a hipster twist to the too traditional darts throwing. Truth be told, it took over the world a few years back but Mother Huckers is the first axe throwing venue in Bali and it deserves to be celebrated!

Looking at the pictures, it seems that hurling a sharpened axe around can be a fun experience to share with your friends. Who knew holding such a deadly weapon could become an addictive entertainment option while in Bali (Note: You’ll be asked to sign a safety release form when you arrive and register).

With axes sourced down from an old Pasar on the island, you’ll be directed by the staff on the rules and regulation of axe-throwing and they are also responsible for keeping the scores as you hold the axe at eye level before bringing it back over your head and whipping it towards the target.

Although you’ll feel like a naughty kid taking risks doing dangerous things, you’ll see it turns out it’s quite a thrill to throw an axe.

Remind yourself that while you should respect the axe, you mustn’t be afraid of the axe, and should basically throw it as hard as you can. Maybe thinking of your worst enemy could help?

11. Trendiest bazaar in Bali’s hipster district – Love Anchor

We’ve told you this million times: Canggu is hipster enough and you know it!

If you walk along Jalan Batu Bolong after the sun sets, you can’t miss this exciting Instagrammable market made up of a complex of restaurants, bars and shops, decorated with dreamy fairy lights and illuminated with a cheery vibe as the crowd pours in for their after-dinner drinks.

And on Sundays, the area is transformed into the most happening bazaar with pop-up stalls.

Here, you can find trendy and whimsical island fashion, accessories, homeware, dreamcatchers, trinkets, and even old school artwork. And if you keep an eye out enough, you can even discover some hidden gems for your kids.

One tip from us – although this is one of Canggu’s most photogenic markets, the shopping here may be a little overpriced, but it’s worth a look (and many snaps!) if you haven’t been to Bali’s weekend bazaars before!

12. The coolest hangout spot in Bali’s hipster hub: Samadi Sunday Market at Samadi Bali

Located in Canggu, the offbeat area of Bali (filled with hipster cafes, stays and everything quirky), Samadi Sunday Market is pretty much like the entire Etsy community homed under one roof with a main focus to contribute to the local community.

From funky jewellery to homemade essential oils, natural soaps and clothes, there’s a decent number of emerging and established artists and designers here including plenty of new talent,  food stalls and great initiatives like Bali Street Mums (which helps street Mums make a living) that you can support too!

Get in early to beat the crowd as this charming artisan organic farmers market is packed to the brim with expats and locals who consider it as the ultimate spot to stock up on zero-chemical fruits and vegetables, organic cheese, crusty bread, and fresh pastries but also a handful of vintage and new clothing, accessories and other bric-a-brac!

Prepare yourself for a zen-like atmosphere as the place is popular among yoga and meditation practitioners who are on a retreat for a healthier lifestyle in magical Bali!

13. Shopping with cocktails, live music and comfort food – Berawa’s Kitchen Market

Hunting for treasures is not the only fun thing to do at Berawa’s Kitchen Market and this is why you should visit Berawa Kitchen on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 3pm to 9pm so you can mark it off your market list!

While you have a whole afternoon to shop for all things handcrafted, unique, quirky and alternative at the hipster stalls, your evening is going to be equally eventful (if not more!).

The market features a multitude of stalls that are perfect for creating or improving your hipster wardrobe, make sure to splurge on some mala necklaces – beaded ones traditionally used in meditation but oh-so-very-hipster these days!

Gather your coolest friends from 7pm to enjoy some music and chilled vibes, making it an ideal spot for mingling with likeminded people, digging in a hearty meal and chugging down few drinks – the ultimate hipster rite of passage!

14. For quirky weekend vibes – Old Man’s Market

Did you think shopping at weekend markets is only possible in Bangkok? Though not as vibrant, Bali’s very own Sunday markets are full of surf, sand and summer styles that will surprise you.

Shopping doesn’t always have to be dash-and-run. Take the entire evening to browse through the lively marketplace with up to 150 stalls gathered at Old Man’s in Canggu, and make it as relaxed as you can – the Old Man really knows how to bring the party to the house.

Get your hands on boho chic jewellery, fun beachwear, and (if you are health-conscious) some very sumptuous organic food. It’s a kind of hipster shopping gathering you wouldn’t want to miss!

15. Sink into too-pretty-to-be-eaten kind of breakfasts – Peloton Supershop

Peloton Supershop is where Chicken Satay has been replaced by Tricken Satay, and Beef Rendang by Belief Redang. But let’s talk breakfast first!

The cafe has been all over social media recently; it is showing up all over the food blogosphere of those who fancy clean eating and a conscious lifestyle. Truth be told, Peloton Supershop is all about minimal earth impact.

Break your fast with one of their morning selections – popular ones include their fully loaded breakfast board or their smoothie bowls adorned with edible flowers. Also, keep some space for their cinnamon spiced pancakes layered with coconut whip and nectar, served with fresh strawberries and sautéed banana.

Best is to order different dishes from their breakfast menu and share among yourselves!

They put so much passion and dedication in the taste and presentation of their dishes that they could turn anyone vegan! I mean, take a look at their menu and food items; surely these selections can make any skeptic gain a new appreciation for the delicious decadence vegan food can offer us!

With the main purpose to bring people of all kinds together, Peloton Supershop welcomes everyone – vegans and non-vegans, people of different religions, backgrounds and with different beliefs. It is the ultimate open-space for everyone to gather and share delicious and healthy food.

16. Free tattoos all the way from Australia to Bali – Deus Ex Machina

A particular gem in Jalan Laksamana (food street) is Deus Ex Machina. More than a typical restaurant, DXM packs a punch with its wicked offerings.

Both a motorcycle shop, cafe and bar, Deus Ex Machina is recognised as a local legend – for its food, along with the customized bikes they build.

Something for those with a penchant for tattoos, we’ve found that Tuesdays are taco and tattoos Tuesday! This means, on Tuesdays, you can order tacos that come with a side of free tattoos (for those who’ve always wanted one, or simply want more!)

Apart from free tattoos, if you love bikes and the riding culture, DXM is the place to be.

17. Discover a Great Gatsby-esque style cafe with plenty of hidden corners – Penny Lane

Despite what people may say about slow service, there’s no doubt that Penny Lane Bali is one of the most hipster hangout spots in the Gu (as of 2019)! If you’re after pretty, sweet cocktails, and decor that’s just to die for on your ‘gram, then get dressed in your snazziest outfits and head on over!

Decorated desert-style with beige and uneven walls around every corner, contrasting cacti that reach for the ceilings, and patterned cushions to throw the whole look together, it’s almost like a mini Mediterranean escape! The star of their show is the greenhouse type building which houses the bulk of their seating and allows for plenty of natural light to give you that IG-worthy glow.

Fan favourites when it comes to food include some of their colourful smoothie bowls, and let’s not forget the mediterranean staple, hummus! Munch on any of their foods and you’ll see that the wait is worth it!

18. An adorably pink, boho chic cafe where you can chill all day long! – Cassava Bali (Temporarily closed)

Everyone loves a good poolside cafe, but what if the pool is actually part of the cafe, how cool would that be? Cassava Bali has come to answer our prayers! Not only do they have incredible plant-based, locally sourced food to offer, you can also eat whilst hopping back and forth between their adorable pool and the nice decor!

With gluten free options, vegan options, and so much more, whether you come for breakfast or dinner you’ll leave feeling satisfied! Start with a chocolate banana smoothie and finish off with a classic smashed avocado on toast. Take a break and burn off some of those calories in the pool before rehydrating with a nice young coconut!

Now I know most people say not to swim straight after eating, but I think Cassava Bali is the perfect place to break some rules, don’t you?

19. Crunchy goodness on the outside soft and chewy deliciousness on the inside – Tropicana Churros Cafe

If you’ve never had a churro, you’re missing out. Hot, and crispy on the outside and soft and gooey on the inside. Dipped in either dark chocolate, matcha, or jam, and completely covered in cinnamon sugar, this sugar rush is one hundred percent worth the potential cavities!

Not to mention, at this particular cafe, the view of the rice paddies is uninterrupted and the perfect backdrop for an IG picture of your delicious snack. Early birds will love their Rp. 15,000 coffees from 7am – 10am everyday for a mix of bitter and sweet. For the night owls, pair it up with one of their delicious cocktails like maybe an espresso martini for the ultimate boozy sunset session. Just make sure it’s during their happy hour from 5pm – 10pm when cocktails are only Rp. 50,000!

Churros aren’t the only thing they sell here, there are also some delicious breakfast platters, succulent meatballs, and fancy smoothie bowls for you to munch on too!

Where to join locals for authentic Indonesian food

20. To satisfy your Nasi Campur craves – Warung Sika

If there’s something locals come here for, it sure is their Nasi Campur – a colourful and exotic traditional delicacy that is a must-try in Bali!

You’ll find it all in a plate – chicken, boiled egg, mixed vegetables, rich curry sauce, topped with peanuts and delicious sambal. The Nasi Campur here is known to be legendary and you can judge by yourself once you get to see people at other tables gulping down their plates of rice in a matter of minutes.

From the counter, you get to choose from a selection of pre-prepared food items and fill your plate with pure goodness including crispy chicken skin, with tender flesh topped with spicy red sambal, a soft boiled egg that has soaked up the red sauce, fresh veggies, crunchy peanuts on the side. Rest assured, vegetarian options are abundant!

21. Local cuisine with an adorable facade: Ulekan Bali

Ulekan is the brainchild of The Good Food Brotherhood, they also created Milk & Madu, Watercress, and The Common. All of these cafes have one thing in common, they’re all extremely Instagrammable, and all serve incredibly delicious food.

In particular, Ulekan deals with their local food lovers, serving up authentic Indonesian cuisine. Fill your table with tender melt-in-the-mouth Beef Rendang, sweet, sour and spicy fish as you dip in other kicking sauces. Their traditional vegetable salad with crunchy fresh vegetables drenched in peanut sauce is a winner too! For an unexpectedly decadent dessert, try their Balinese banoffee. The Es Teler (fruit cocktail served in coconut milk and sweetened condensed milk) does not disappoint either – it is satisfying without being overly sweet!

If you’re feeling extra hungry, and you simply can’t choose off the menu, why not try their tasting menu? You and one other lucky person can taste some of their fan favourites, you could even do a wine pairing and get boozy!!

22. Friday nights are for movies and popcorn under the stars – Made’s Warung Berawa

For years, parents with kids across the world have been struggling to find solutions for Friday night dates while on vacay… Where do we leave the kids? With who? What will they do? What will they eat?

Well, problem solved in Bali as Made’s Warung Berawa is where you can bring your kids and let them be! Come for your date night with the little ones and set them off on their adventure with Made’s Warung Berawa’s talented staff.

You won’t be disturbed while you escape indoors with your partner and dig into small plates of Indonesian delicacies paired with cocktails and ice-cold beers.

Made’s Warung Berawa welcomes kids with open arms on weekends with each Saturday dedicated to a different kind of craft. Balinese dancing? Arts and Crafts, anything!

23. Choose where to catch waves today – Kima Surf

24. If you don’t have a kids’ club at your hotel – The Garden Bali Early Learning Centre & Kids Club

Why would you even consider sending your child to school while on holiday? Well, if learning’s always as fun as it is at The Garden Bali, we wouldn’t mind going to school either.

The Garden Early Learning Centre is a casual drop-in and long-term school for local and visiting children alike.

Kids from as young as 18 months old up to six years old will have a smashing time with educational play at the Kids’ Club, where they’ll get to try their hand at activities like arts and crafts and Lego building. They might even emerge as the next Kiddie Masterchef at the kids’ cooking classes!

Short 5-day holiday programs are also available if you’re racking your brains on how to entertain your children. Simply drop them off at the learning centre and watch them run into the magical worlds of witches, dinosaurs and even outer space.

If you’re envious of all the fun your kid is having, you can even join them  in their learning journey at the Parent and Child Early Learning classes. Every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday morning, parents can turn up for school with their little ones (up to two years old) and bond with them while learning through fun activities.

Everything here is educational and fun. Little drama kings and queens will love the after-school drama clubs, and you can even choose to throw a birthday party for your child. Better yet, all these programs are conducted under the watchful eye of trained facilitators and are chock full of amazing activities. Who says school has to be a pain?

Embark on short day trips from Canggu (less than 30 minutes’ drive) or join in weekly events to save the planet!

1. Take a scenic trek and witness a spectacular sunset – Tanah Lot (20 minutes’ drive)

Fancy visiting a 16th Century temple located in the middle of the sea? If your answer is yes, you should make a trip down to Tanah Lot, which in Balinese means ‘Land in the Sea’.

Tanah Lot sits on a large offshore rock in the ocean, and its odd-looking structure can be attributed to several hundred years of nature at work. One of the seven sea temples located along the Bali coastline, Tanah Lot is also one of the most picturesque locations in Canggu!

During the low tide, you can cross over to the base of the temple, although visitors are not allowed in the actual temple itself. While you’re there, keep an eye out for the small caves caused by wave erosion.

It is rumoured to be inhabited by venomous sea snakes, believed to be guardians of the temple.  If you’re visiting during the evening, get ready to snap some beautiful Instagram photos because Tanah Lot is known for one of the most gorgeous spots to witness the sunset.

If you don’t want to jostle with the crowd for space, be sure to come a little earlier!

2. Step into a royal water temple – Pura Taman Ayun (30 minutes’ drive)

A short day trip to Pura Taman Ayun will fascinate you with pleasant architecture, serenity and elegance as you bask in a temple gently floating on water.

As you walk through the beautiful sanctuary, you get to experience exceptional Chinese-inspired architectures and arts that date back to 1634, which is when the temple was built.

Pura Taman Ayun was the main temple of worship for the Mengwi kingdom, which survived until 1891, and later conquered by the neighbouring kingdoms of Tabanan and Badung.

Historical buffs will find delight while they relish multiple courtyards adorned by lotus-filled ponds. The encircling pools were once royal recreational places for the palace maids who would sail small canoes. Eventually, with more visitors, they ended up fencing up the pool surroundings for safety purposes.

3. Fun in the sand that’s better for the environment! – Trash Hero Canggu Beach Clean Up (weekly event)

Bali beaches are sacred to both locals and tourists, it does after all have some of the best beaches in the world! Unfortunately a lot of plastic waste and other forms of rubbish have been washing up on the coastline, damaging its appearance and causing harm to wildlife.

Thankfully, several organisations now have regular beach clean ups that you can participate in! Trash Hero is one of the first of those organisations, and they run one weekly (details of the meetup point can be found on their facebook page.)

What better way to spend your day meeting like-minded people, making the environment a better place, and then sitting down to rest with a yummy fresh coconut after your hard work!
